News Wednesday 11th May 2011 By Geoff Meyer

I haven't heard a negative word about last years Grand Prix of United States and rightly so. The action was amazing and the whole Grand Prix paddock should be congratulated on a really special event. We also had two of the leading AMA riders battling our top GP riders, what more could you ask.

With millions of people watching the live television and internet coverage the sport of Motocross won in a big way. Here are my top ten things from last years event.

1.       I am not sure if people fully understand what happened at Glen Helen last weekend. When Antonio Cairoli showed Mike Alessi and Ben Townley the fastest way around the circuit he proved that the Italian legend can win anywhere, anytime. That terrible performance of Cairoli at the 2007 MXoN has been laid to rest forever.  Cairoli proved once again he is possibly the fastest Motocross rider in the World last weekend and his consistent performance just added to his opening moto of the 2009 Motocross of Nations domination over Chad Reed and Ryan Dungey.

2.       Ben Townley’s comeback win was just a pleasure to watch. Townley might be close to being called a veteran on the World scene with more than a decade of International racing under his belt, but his second moto performance at Glen Helen showed that an AMA National championship is well in his grasp. A little more bike time and he wouldn’t make the same mistake that saw Mike Alessi help him to the ground in that opening moto. The GP victory was his for the taking.

3.       Marvin Musquin was the man of the day, undefeated on his first appearance in America and I can tell you this kid will be doing some serious winning when he goes there full time in 2011. In my opinion he is better than most of the World Champions that have ridden in America in the last ten years.

4.       The crowd, yes, it wasn’t huge, but you know what, those Americans that dared turn up to the GP not really knowing what to expect deserve full marks. The winner was of course those spectators that decided that the World Motocross Championship is a worthy days entertainment and that is just what it was.

5.       American teams came in numbers to help out and just as the European teams do for them, it was nice to see the Euro’s and American’s mixing. It’s what the sport is all about and it’s a pity the American riders didn’t join them.

6.       Former riders were everywhere, from Jeff Emig, Ron Lechien, Shayne King, David Bailey, Ricky Johnson, Johnny O’Mara, Chuck Sun, Jeff Matasavich, Sebastien Tortelli, Eric Geboers, Paul Malin and so many more. Many of them former USGP of MXoN winners and all of them a credit to the sport.

7.       Youthstream and their amazing energy for the sport. We are hearing two or three USGP’s in 2011 and an Australian Grand Prix. We get Monster Energy arriving on the World scene and promising to do just what they did for AMA Supercross. 2011 is going to be a Monster year for the sport.

8.       Red Bull, THOR, Monster Energy and all the major sponsors who made the whole event special. Just like at the Motocross of Nations this event was well presented and all the American industry people noticed.

9.       Glen Helen and its amazing circuit. The euro’s really had trouble getting used to those big hills, and the high speed of the circuit, but all in all the landscape of Glen Helen made of a very exciting weekends racing.

10.   The veteran’s races. Doug Dubach and Darryl King were amazing and their Saturday battle was close to being the race of the weekend. King took a big crash on Sunday which robbed us of another classic battle, but you couldn’t have asked for a better veteran’s event.
