Grand Prix of Germany - Top Ten Things

The Monster Energy girls in Germany - Archer image

News Tuesday 22th June 2010 By Geoff Meyer

The Grand Prix of Germany was another enjoyable weekend as the FIM World Motocross Championship turned its attention to the Talkessel circuit in the former East Germany. Despite mixed weather and overnight rain the event saw a large crowd arrive expecting to see local riders Ken Roczen and Max Nagl battle the best in the World.

It turned out to be a weekend Monster Energy Yamaha rider Ken De Dycker once again showed his teeth with a stunning 1-1 victory in the MX1 class, while Marvin Musquin wrapped up his seventh GP win of the season.

I really enjoyed the Grand Prix and while I only visited for the Saturday due to some family matters here are my top ten things about the Grand Prix of Germany.

1. The Crowd. What can you say about the sport of Motocross in Germany at this moment? With both Max Nagl, Steffi Laier and Ken Roczen winning races and GP’s their home public came out in numbers and really made for a great atmosphere at the GP.

2. Yamaha riders. After a slow start to the season Yamaha mounted riders are finally showing their real speed. David Philippaerts winning in France and now De Dycker winning in Germany it’s given the blue (well black) bikes some respect. Can’t wait to see De Dycker in Latvia this weekend.

3. Monster Energy girls and Rockstar Energy girls. What is the World coming to, but WOW, the ladies in black were stunning and added some glamour to the paddock, and the Rockstar girls were also a nice addition to the paddock atmosphere. How our sport is improving and finally we are getting some of that American glitz.

4. The track. Some riders complained, others said it was great. When I arrived on Sunday morning I was impressed. Overnight rain had given it a fresh look, but not muddy and the whole place was covered in ruts. Compared to the super fast Talkessel circuit of years gone by this circuit was amazing, and so much safer for the riders.

5. Dean Ferris. Ok, so the Aussie only went 22-14, but in my humble opinion showed enough to think he could be a top ten rider given a little more experience, now in this MX1 class that is really something. The Aussie came to Europe on his own coin and walked the walk, full credit to him.

6. Zach Osborne. The American is slowly building to something big. I wouldn’t be surprises to see him win a Grand Prix in the coming month, he will need a little luck to beat Marvin Musquin, but on a circuit like Latvia the GP might fall right into his hands.

7. KTM and the start. More so in the MX2 class but those bikes are sooooo fast out of the start. How many times this year have we seen the orange bikes running 1-2-3 around that first corner? MX1 is similar.

8. My kids. I know, has nothing to do with racing, but for me it was a special Sunday just hanging around the paddock and showing my kids what an amazing sport we have. My kids have been going to the races since they were babies, but each and every time they go the paddock people treat them well. Motocross is a great place for kids to have fun and this Sunday was just perfect for mine.

9. The rain. I heard that Saturday was dusty and not that brilliant, but come Sunday and a little overnight rain and the place was shining. This Grand Prix is often basking in sunshine and while we did get some sun, the mix or overcast and sunshine gave a nice mix.

10. The back markers. From Matteo Bonini to Lars Olderkamp and Robert Sturm, everyone puts in a huge effort to race Motocross. Watching from the sidelines is fun, and on a warm day you can something wonder how these amazing sportsman do their job. Credit to a long list of riders who race Motocross for the love of the sport and not for the money.
