Grand Prix of Latvia - A highlight in a magnificent season
News Wednesday 23th June 2010 By Geoff Meyer
A United States Grand Prix held at the amazing Glen Helen circuit and impressive performances by series leaders Antonio Cairoli and Marvin Musquin. We really couldn’t ask for me, yet the best is still to come.
The Grand Prix of Latvia starts the run to the finish of what has been an enjoyable season to date. Latvia only in its second year is to me the highlight of the season. Arriving in Latvia last year was like going on holidays as the beautiful city of Riga opened its arms to the Motocross World.
It didn’t matter if you were there for the races or for the fun, Latvia has it all. The Kegums circuit is really beautiful. Circled by Pine trees it is one of the old school styled circuits on the calendar, but has a freshness about it that just makes it nice to be there.
As for the racing Kegums also produces good close racing and it’s a circuit that will bring out the best in the real talents of the sport. Names like Musquin, Cairoli, Desalle, Roczen, Herlings and De Dycker will really rock and roll around the technically demanding circuit.
What I love about Latvia is the friendly nature of the people, and the culture of the place. As mentioned Riga is a blast with magnificent restaurants and cafes. Nights in Riga are about fun and the Motocross community knows how to enjoy themselves.
Ryanair fly to Riga from many destinations and for as little as 40euro you can find yourself in the land of nature and beautiful ladies.
One of the best places to eat is the RozenGrals restaurant. It is an authentic medieval restaurant and you can find the link at www.rozengrals.lv just keep a place for me on Saturday night.
Once Latvia is out of the way the GP circus heads to Sweden, Belgium, Czech Republic, Brazil, Holland and Italy. It’s going to be an enjoyable ride to the championship deciding rounds and I can’t wait to visit some of these rounds. Places like Lommel and Lierop where huge crowds are expected and close racing is a must, to the hard pack of Loket and Fermo. Brazil with its exotic feel will really give the season the final touch.
Of course the last race of the season will be the Red Bull Motocross of Nations and again we return to America. After the success of the USGP the whole Grand Prix paddock is looking forward to waving the season goodbye with some classic racing between the AMA and FIM rivals.
