Grand Prix of Latvia - Top Ten Things
News Wednesday 30th June 2010 By Geoff Meyer
Here is my top ten things from Latvia.
1. Rockstar Suzuki. Often taking a back seat to the Red Bull KTM and Monster Energy Yamaha riders in the past month or so it was nice to see the yellow Suzuki's rocking and rolling their way to victory on Saturday with Clement Desalle and Ken Roczen and then Desalle winning Sunday MX1 overall.
2. Evgeny Bobryshev. The Russian tornado was really impressive in Kegums. Full of fire and on a bike that looks like a rocket ship the CAS Honda giant made his first steps towards what might be another of the CAS success stories. A nice kid with a good work ethic is always a pleasure to watch.
3. The beauty of Latvia. You name it and you will find it in Latvia. Nature, ladies, fine resteraunts, cafes with hundreds of taste beers, friendly people, it's just got it all. My favorite GP for all these reasons.
4. The paddock people. The setting in Kegums is really relaxed and finding people sitting on their chairs in the sun or under a tree was a regular sight. I guess in many ways Kegums is old school and for all the GP regulars a little old school is always nice.
5. The Charge of the MX2 class. This class just never gets boring, even with Marvin Musquin out of the picture in the second moto due to a crash there were three guys going for it up front. Herlings, Musquin, Roczen and Frossard deserve great respect for their desire to win.
6. The weather. Yep, without the good old sunshine we just wouldn't have had the things I mentioned in number three on our list. Ok, the ladies would have come, but not been nearly as well dress had it been raining. Beer is so much tastier when it's hot and well, beautiful countryside and sunshine is a must for a perfect weekend.
7. The Press tent. So many smiling faces, everyone being so positive about the great job we have and showing so much respect for their fellow workers. I can't think of a better group of people who are 100% busy with their own thing.
8. The World Cup. Yep, paddock televisions were on all weekend watching the action. The Football World Cup just added to the atmosphere of an already enjoyable weekend.
9. The Latvian locals. Privateer riders Ivo Steinbergs, Lauris Freibergs, Davis Ivanovs, Niks Apfebaums, Vytautas Bucas, Toms Macuks, Matiss Karro, Roberts Justs, Augusts Justs all gave the Latvian crowd something to cheer about. And who said GP racing doesn't have privateers.
10. Helmet cams in MX2. Ok, maybe this wasn't one of the highlights, but it sure made for a a lot of talk about the paddock and in the press room. Bar room brawls are fun, but not in Motocross.
