Primo and Musquin - Archer image

News Thursday 08th July 2010 By Geoff Meyer

27 years old Jon Primo from the south of France might not be known to many Motocross fans, but he is well known inside the Grand Prix paddock. Primo has worked for many riders over the last ten years and is presently the mechanic for MX2 World Champion Marvin Musquin.

With 10 years experience on the FIM World Motocross Championship Primo is always ready for new challenges and working with a World Motocross Champion has given him a lot of respect in the paddock. We decided to ask him some questions about his present rider and also about some of his past riders.

Q: Jon, how did you get into Motocross?

Primo: I did a special mechanics school in France, and I also lived close to the Bud Racing team and I worked there for a while doing suspension and stuff. When I was there I met many riders and I got into it like this and here I am. I am really happy to be involved in the Motocross.

Q: How would you describe Marvin?

Primo: Marvin is an easy guy, he isn’t so hard for the bike, he likes the levers and handlebars in his position, but for the rest he is easy in. We did a lot of testing in winter and now we start to do something with Supercross testing, because he already starts to prepare for that. He needs good response for Supercross and stiff suspension, we do some more testing soon for that.

Q: What about his personality?

Primo: Marvin is a good guy, he is easy and funny, he is a good kid. He keeps his head on his shoulders. He is World Champion, but he hasn’t changed. He likes it when people work hard for him and he always says thank you.

Q: Do you go to America with him?

Primo: I go to America with him. It’s a different lifestyle, different country; it’s not as easy as everyone thinks. When I was in working with Andrew McFarlane in 2005 we tried to get it sorted that I go with him to America the following year, but we couldn’t get the visa, so I didn’t go. Now I get another chance and I take it for sure. KTM is organizing everything for me.

Q: Which riders have you worked with?

Primo: I have worked for Jeremy Tarroux, also with Julien Bill, Andrew McFarlane, Tom Church, Pascal Leuret and then I went to KTM working on R&D on the new KTM’s, and then I worked with Shaun Simpson at the start of 2009, but he got injured and then I started working with Marvin. At the end it was bad for Shaun but good for me as I got to work with Marvin and we get on really well together.

Q: You must have been shocked when Andrew passed away?

Primo: Andrew was a good guy, I don’t know why, but three or four days before he passed away he contacted me and said he missed me and he wanted to work with me again.  I was pretty upset when he passed away; it was really nice working with him.
