MXLarge Top Ten of the Month – Dungey leads the way
News Monday 19th July 2010 By Geoff Meyer
As the AMA and FIM series are similar in talent at the top we decided to look at the major players in each class. I nice mix of the best riders in the World.
So here goes.
1. Ryan Dungey – USA
Wow, how good has this guy gotten. He has won 10 of the 14 motos run in the 450cc class in America and is on a RC like roll. Training with legend Ricky Carmichael and working with team manager Roger De Coster sure makes for the right circle of friends. Dungey has dominated the best AMA riders indoors and outdoors and after his MXoN overall and team victory last year he holds a strong bet as the fastest man on the planet. Already an AMA 125cc MX and SX (2009) and 250cc SX champion (2010) he is going for title number four in the last 12 months, that is pretty impressive.
2. Antonio Cairoli – Italy
As he does he will just do enough to win his fourth World Motocross Championship. He took victory at the Grand Prix of Sweden a couple of weeks ago, but more importantly he is leading the MX1 series points by a mile. It will take a huge effort from Clement Desalle to reel him in and the Italian knows something about finishing the job. Cairoli is all class and without question the best bet to give the American’s a run at the MXoN.
3. Trey Canard – USA
After winning at Red Bud he picked up win number two last weekends at Spring Creek. Now in line for a spot on the American team for the Motocross of Nations Canard is showing the form that many expected from him in previous seasons. Is fourth in the AMA Lite class some 55points behind Pourcel.
4. Marvin Musquin – France
The French phenomenon is just doing what he has to do. After winning 12 of the first 16 motos in the FIM World MX2 Championship Musquin seems to be taking the easier route to his second World title, consistent and no mistakes. He has been beaten by Jeffrey Herlings and Steven Frossard in the last month, but he is miles ahead of his rivals where it counts and with a massive points leads can relax a little. For that he deserves to be spotted near the top.
5. Christophe Pourcel - France
They call him the crafty Frenchman and that is for a reason. He hasn’t won an overall this month, but like his countryman Musquin he knows how to put it together when it counts. He has won seven of the 12 motos run and has a 37 point lead over rookie Dean Wilson of Scotland and 48 pts lead over third placed Tyla Rattray of South Africa.
6. Steven Frossard – French
Grand Prix winner in Sweden and the most improved rider in the MX2 series points. Put this guy up against any of the leading MX1 or MX2 riders and you will find him in contention. Our third Frenchman in the list and in my eyes a sure bet to be picked for the MXoN in September.
7. Ben Townley – New Zealand
He might not be second in the AMA 450cc points, but after taking off two years and coming back in the form he is in, he deserves to be above Andrew Short who is just a few points ahead of him in the series points. Pushing too hard maybe at this stage of his comeback has cost him, but expect Townley to shine as the season reaches the later stages. If Dungey has problems BT might just end up with an AMA title.
8. Clement Desalle - Belgium
The Belgian has gone 2-1-2-2 in this month’s GP races and is always there when it counts. Just selected for the Belgian MXoN team he will be on fire in Colorado. Would love to see him stick his front wheel up the inside of James Stewart at that event, and just see how Stewart responds. Desalle isn’t scared of anything or anyone.
9. Andrew Short – America
Our third American in the top ten and Mr. Consistent just rides around picking up the points. In my opinion he will be overhauled by Townley in the series points pretty soon, but he is in line for an MXoN team spot and he is one rider who deserves to be called up.
10. Dean Wilson – Scotland
The Scotsman had gone 1-2-3-3-2 before a bad round last weekend and is really a rider with huge potential. No doubt British MXoN team manager Steve Dixon is busy working out a spot for him in the British team for the MXoN and who can deny him the spot. A nice kid it seems and for sure he will be a highlight of the MXoN.
Wildcards. Evgeny Bobryshev, Tyla Rattray, Jeffrey Herlings, Ken Roczen and Kyle Regal.
