Defending the Crown - Musquin and Cairoli
News Monday 19th July 2010 By Geoff Meyer
Musquin would need six points more than those riders in the next three rounds to win the championship in Brazil, just as he did in 2009.
Of course only really bad luck would stop him winning the championship, and even with some bad luck he should be winning the title in Lierop at the start of September.
As for defending World MX1 Champion Antonio Cairoli his job is a little harder. The Italian has a 67 point lead in the championship and would need 11 points per Grand Prix more than second placed Clement Desalle to win in Brazil, but the more likely proposition would be him winning also in Lierop.
If that was to happen Cairoli would need to just equal Desalles points haul for the next four GP's or finish five points each GP less than the Belgian. It would be the third time Cairoli has won a World title at the sand track.
Of course anything can happen in Motocross and while Desalle, Roczen and Frossard wait in the wings for the two KTM riders to make a mistake or worse get injured we just hope justice is served. Of course any true Motocross fan wouldn’t wish either on the two leading riders who clearly deserve to be crowned World MX1 and MX2 Champions in 2010.
Musquin would be the first rider since Alessio Chiodi in 1997,1998 1999 to defend the MX2/125cc championship successfully. The last time two riders in the same year had success in the defence of their championships was nearly 10 years ago in 2001 and 2002 when Motocross legends Mickael Pichon and Stefan Everts defended their 250cc and 500cc titles.
Back in 1997 and 1998 Joel Smets and Alessi Chiodi defended their 500cc and 125cc titles with success. Ten years earlier John Van Den Berk and Eric Geboers didn't defend their championships, although Van Den Berk won the 125cc and 250cc titles in 1987 and 1988 and Geboers won the 250cc and 500cc titles in the same two years.
From 1962 until 1978 several riders doubled up with Torsten Hallman and Rolf Tibblin winning two in a row in the 250cc and 500cc titles in 1962 and 1963. Hallman won three in a row in 1966, 67 while Paul Friedrichs did the same in the 500cc class, in fact the German rider actually won three in a row from 1966 until 1968. In 1977 and 78 Heikki Mikkola won two World 500cc Championships and in the same two years Guennady Moissev won the two 250cc titles.
Joel Robert won four in a row in the 250cc class, doing so in 1967, 68, 69 and 70 and next to him Bengt Aberg won two 500cc titles and Roger De Coster won two 500cc titles. In 1975 and 76 Gaston Rahier won the 125cc title, while De Coster won the 500cc titles in the same years. It was way back in 1980 and 1981 that Harry Everts and Andre Malherbe defended their 125cc and 500cc titles with success.
