Questions and Answers - What A Month

Everyone wants this number - Ray Archer image

News Tuesday 27th July 2010 By Geoff Meyer

It has been an amazing month in the sport of Motocross. Red Bull KTM Factory rider Antonio Cairoli started the month with his victory at the Grand Prix of Sweden, showing the World that he doesn’t just want to cruise home to his fourth World Motocross Championship.

The Italian is just a class act and is doing everything possible to be considered the fastest man on the planet, but across the Atlantic Ocean Ryan Dungey is proving a little too tough for his rivals. With his confidence at an all time high the Rockstar Suzuki rider is running away with the AMA National Motocross Championship, and as his rival’s crash their way to the ground the American is remaining mister cool.

The American based AMA series has been a strange one with defending champion Chad Reed of Australia looking so strong early, then totally losing track and blaming a mystery sickness for his results. Having won the opening round Reed look anything but sick, but will now miss the rest of the season and probably the MXoN.

As for New Zealand’s Ben Townley, he looked likely to be the next man in line to give Dungey some competition, although he hasn’t been the same Ben Townley from years gone and is spending as much time on the ground as on the bike. Is he riding over his head, or is it just bad luck. Everyone hopes the former World Motocross Champion can find that championship form and return to the top of the podium.

The Lites class in America has also been crazy, first defending Champion Christophe Pourcel looked too tough for his rivals, but like Reed he started suffering from “second moto”fade. Often winning the first moto, but then struggling in the second moto. Now it’s been totally turned around as Trey Canard is doing his best to make a Carmichael, Stewart, Dungey run to the Lites Championship.

Back in Europe another Red Bull KTM Factory Jeffrey Herlings has been doing some racing. Proving too fast at the annual Blackcross in Holland the 15 year old also showed great speed at the Stefan Everts Charity race in Belgium. Can’t wait to see this kid racing around Lommel next weekend. He will be hard to beat.

How about the talk of Christophe Pourcel riding the MXoN. Now I don’t care that Canard is beating him, or that Dungey won the Lites class from him in 2010, to me the Frenchman has the most beautiful style in the sport. Always calm, never reckless. Not sure how his body is dealing with the injury from 2007, but he is so classy on the bike, and his choice of lines is just brilliant. Sure hope he does ride the 450 machine at the MXoN and can run with guys like Cairoli, Dungey, Stewart and Desalle.

Talking about James Stewart, you have to start wondering if he will be back to his old speed once back on the bike. Is he hungry enough. There is talk of him racing the Unadilla round of the AMA Nationals on August 14, and that might also be a round that see’s Cairoli and Marvin Musquin racing (depending on their championship situation), not to mention fierce Belgian Clement Desalle.

Now everyone knows that Stewart doesn’t like to be roughed up, he has proven in the past that if a rider gets in his head he struggles. Everts and Carmichael did it and even Sebastien Pourcel did it. If Desalle get a wheel close to Bubba he might be better getting out of the way, because the Belgian doesn’t go soft on you if you are a star.

Both Musquin and Cairoli have mentioned that they want a crack at the AMA riders, and the only real chances are Unadilla on August 14 or Southwick on August 28. They won’t risk getting injured or racing in America if their World titles are not wrapped up, so Caroli would need to leave the Grand Prix of Czech Republic with a lead of 151pts, which probably isn’t going to happen, and the same goes for Musquin.

Musquin does have around 80pts on his rivals, so he would need to pick up around 70 points on Frossard and Roczen in Lommel and Loket. Also not going to happen. So if Cairoli and Musquin are serious about doing a National then it’s Southwick, which will run the week after the Brazilian Grand Prix (same area, same time zone maybe). Then again both would need to leave Brazil with the championships, and that is also a tough call. Look like we might have to wait until the MXoN before we see the Cairoli versus Dungey and Musquin versus Canard battles.
