The Crafty Frenchmen – Pourcel and Musquin
News Wednesday 28th July 2010 By Geoff Meyer
While Trey Canard is on another planet at the moment I don’t see anything that changes Pourcel’s game plan, sure he wants to win, and he wants to beat everyone in that Lites class and it’s the championship he wants, not just a single moto or overall. If Canard has a lead in a moto I don’t know how much harder the Frenchman will push to get to the lead rider. With a 38 point advantage over Canard Pourcel is in a very, very strong position. Everyone and anyone know that Pourcel lost last year’s AMA Lites Championship when his bike broke in the closing rounds and he doesn’t want to lose it again in 2010.
In my opinion he might still be the fastest guy on the planet, but with a massive points lead that continues to grow (former numbers two and three Dean Wilson and Tyla Rattray scored less points than Pourcel in Washougal handing second in the championship to the hot and cold Canard) Pourcel only needs to do what he needs to do. He’s won eight of the 16 motos run, and doesn’t look like a man with problems.
Same story with Red Bull KTM Factory rider Marvin Musquin. Here is a guy who holds a 83 point lead in the FIM World MX2 Championship. He has won 13 of the 20 motos and after building a huge point’s lead he has backed it down a little in the last three races. He’s being beaten by a lot of guys at the moment and gone 7-4-5 in this last three motos, but he still has that 83 point lead.
Musquin and Pourcel are two very similar riders, both are super cool under pressure, both have brilliant riding styles (at times both even look a little like Stefan Everts) and both are known for controlling the situation.
Musquin fought through the early season battle with Ken Roczen and Jeffrey Herlings and to be honest in those early rounds I thought these young kids might just have his number. After crashing out in Valkenswaard the Frenchman looked a little desperate, but he returned from that weekend with 1-1 in the next round in Portugal, a round that more or less gave him a big edge over the two teenagers.
I don’t think there is any doubt that Musquin will be 2010 World MX2 Champion and Pourcel needs to put out the fire of Canard at the Unadilla circuit on August 14. If he can do that, then the French kids are looking at doing the double. What I wouldn’t give to see these two go at it, the two best MX2 riders in the World going head to head to find out who is the best MX2 rider in the World.
