Top Ten Things From Lommel - Rough and Tumble
News Monday 02nd August 2010 By Geoff Meyer
Here are my top ten things of the Grand Prix of Limburg.
1. Antonio Cairoli. The soon to be four times World Motocross Champion is just amazing. He spend a few Grand Prix’s not racing to his full potential as he started counting points instead of trying to win races. Now he is back to trying to win it is coming easy. Is he the best rider in the World, statistics says yes, his performance in Lommel says yes, now we need the answer at the 2010 Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations? Bring it on.
2. The circuit. What can be said about Lommel? Cairoli and Roczen both said it’s the roughest circuit they have ever ridden. Be it from the preparation from the Youthstream of Lommel staff, the high humidity in the previous weeks that obviously would help the conditions or just the animal that Lommel is you have to love it.
3. Ken Roczen and Jeffrey Herlings. How can we split these two amazing riders? Sure Marvin Musquin I counting points at the moment just as Antonio Cairoli was doing in Germany and Latvia, but still at 16 and 15 years old both the German and the Dutchman continue to show how lucky we are to have them racing in the FIM series.
4. Monster Energy Girls. They came in numbers to Lommel and with their blonde curls and their pretty smiles it’s pretty hard not to be happy they are part of the series. 2011 and Monster Energy will rock our World. Red Bull has been great, but the Monster Army is on the way with some really exciting plans.
5. Max Nagl. The German rider isn’t 100% fit, but he keeps on keeping on. Pushing Cairoli in the opening moto and showing signs of his best Nagl isn’t just a great racer but a true gentleman. We need more of riders like Max Nagl on the scene.
6. Evgeny Bobryshev. The Russian Tornado is looking more and more like a contender for 2011. His speed is scary, similar to that of Ken De Dycker on a good day, and his determination has a little Joe Smets feel about it. Come 2011 and the CAS Honda rider will be running for moto wins and possibly GP wins.
7. The Youthstream/Teams meeting. When everyone is happy in the paddock it makes for a much more enjoyable weekend. Smiling faces and positive comments is all we every really wanted and this meeting brought the teams and Youthstream even closer together.
8. The crowd. For the fifth time this year we have had a huge crowd turn out for the Grand Prix. Countries like Holland, France, Germany, Italy and Belgium just produce big, big crowds and this year it’s seemed even bigger than previous years. Part being from the promotional aspects of the races and also the brilliant action in both MX1 and MX2. GP racing is rich at the moment.
9. Rider and Team managers. It was fun watching them all mixing and smiling. Many teams complain about rider managers, but when it’s time to negotiate the attitude changes and everyone wants to make a deal. So many rumors and most of them making for really, really exciting changes for 2011.
10. Josh Coppins. No Josh didn’t do anything that amazing, well he showed his lion heart again, but what’s new with that. Josh has decided to leave GP racing at the end of the year and to be honest it leaves me with a sad feeling. He has been an amazing competitor for a decade and a half and while he might not have that World title to his name, he’s a legend when it comes to knowing the sport and giving his fans, the media and sponsors 100%. You will be missed JC.
