Sword chasing a British Dream - Silverstone
News Tuesday 31th August 2010
Fresh from his first victory 2 weeks ago at Farliegh Castle, a determined Swordy went into the Silverstone round with much confusion over the fitness of his main rival Evgeny Bobrychev and the rumours that the Russian had broken ribs.
It would have been easy to become complacent and expect that his rival would not be fit but the professionalism of both David Thorpe, CCM's Sporting Director, and Steve meant that they would remain totally focussed and prepared to do battle with a fully fit Bobrychev. Clearly the rumours of broken ribs and punctured lungs were unfounded as Bobrychev remained very competitive for all 3 races but Swordy was prepared and ensured he came out on top of the points leader board on the day.
The mornings timed training saw the Buildbase CCM duo of Swordy and Tom Church 1st and 2nd fastest by over 2 seconds, but a stalled engine on Superpole put Steve back in 12th position on the line with TC taking a fine 2nd behind Jason Dougan on a very technical Silverstone wet circuit.
Race 1 and Steve took the holeshot putting in a magnificent display winning the race by a massive 29 seconds over the rest of the pack on his Buildbase CCM 450. TC had made his way into a comfortable second by mid race and it was looking like a CCM 1-2 until a back marker's bike kicked up a large rock which hit TC in the face and dazed him causing a mistake at the next turn which saw TC over the bars, Bobrychev moved up to 2nd after a poor start.
In the remaining two races Steve pushed hard with credible 2nd place in each race which was enough to give him the overall against Bobrychev's 2,4,1 placings and a 4 point clawback from the Russian. Tom Church posted 4, 7, 4 for 5th overall on the day.
A very pleased Dave Thorpe said after the races, "we were prepared for anything thrown at us today, we are going in the right direction and we deserved the overall again today. There is a 33 point gap between Swordy and Bobby and we will continue to treat this Championship as though we are going to win it. There is a month until the decider at Hawkstone and a lot can happen from now until then. We will continue giving 100% until the last race at Hawkstone on October 3rd.
