Moments of 2011 - Highs and Lows

News Friday 24th November 2011 By Geoff Meyer

It’s been two months now since the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations closed down the 2011 season. Two months of riders repairing their broken bodies and team working hard to find their budgets for 2012. We decided it might be a good idea to look through some of the moments of the 2011 season.

Kenny Roczen giving Villopoto and Dungey a hard time. This kid is just amazing and the way he handled himself in 2011 was more than you could have expected. But just like Stefan Everts had done in 2006 against James Stewart the German teenager put it to the two fastest riders in the World at this year’s MXoN and will be a huge success in America in 2012.

Cairoli’s hot streak of August. Antonio Cairoli fighting back from a knee injury and putting together wins in Latvia, Belgium, England and Germany, and placing second at the GP of Czech Republic. As he always does when Mr. Cairoli put the hammer down then nobody can race with him. On

Evgeny Bobryshev winning GP. The most refreshing moment came at the Teuchenthal circuit in Germany. Having watched the effort being put in by Martin Honda World Motocross team is was a pleasure to see their hard work go into results. When Evgeny Bobryshev stood on top of the podium and was circled by the Honda World team members I don’t think anyone could have begrudged them their success.

Steve Ramon’s crash at Lommel. This was without question the low point of the season. Ramon has always been the complete gentleman and his riding skills are at times second to none. The last Belgian to win a World Motocross Championship he will be missed terribly, but fortunately it wasn’t as bad as we all first thought.

Jeffrey Herlings winning in Lommel. Nobody can match this kid in the sand. You have to even wonder if he is the best sand rider of all time, he is that fast. Hope he gets the chance to race an AMA National in 2012, although the only problem is they don’t have sand in America like they do in Holland and Belgium.

Steven Frossard in Bulgaria. He nearly won the Grand Prix and looked amazing. Nobody could have expected him to continue that form right through the 2011 season. Can’t wait to see if he can continue that form in 2012.

Tommy Searle winning in France. Searle is a true Motocross racer. He never gives up and despite not being in the same league as Roczen this year he might just get the chance to win that elusive World title in 2012. Going 3-2-2-3 in his last four World title attempts has prepared him well for next year.

British Grand Prix. The riders, the paddock and the crowd all enjoyed this old school Grand Prix facility. Great racing and the atmosphere within the spectators made it a great pleasure.

Rider injuries. Another low point in the season was the amount of riders who got injured in the month of August and September. The Motocross of Nations missed riders like Philippaerts, De Dycker, Desalle, Van Horebeek, Frossard, Ramon, Townley and so many more. It sucked big time.
