MXoN Moto winners - Cairoli the King of the decade

Antonio Cairoli - Ray Archer image

News Monday 01st October 2012 By Geoff Meyer

When Antonio Cairoli crossed the finish line in that MX1/Open class moto it was the 11th time a Grand Prix rider would win a moto at the Motocross of Nations in 8 years. He also won his fourth MXoN moto, pretty impressive when you consider this event has not always been kind to him.
Of course he also won motos in 2006 in Matterley Basin and 2009 in Italy, and in winning his fourth moto he joins Ryan Villopoto as the only guy in that period to win four motos at the MXoN. Ryan Dungey has three wins.

Of course while Cairoli only missed the 2008 MXoN due to injury, Dungey has competed in four MXoN in that period and Ryan Villopoto has competed in four and like Cairoli has had terrible luck for this event. Villopoto like Cairoli in 2008 was injured in the years he missed (2009, 2010 and 2012).

What does impress me is the fact GP riders have won 11 times in that period and AMA riders 13 times. Of course for AMA riders in Budds Creek in 2007 and Thunder Valley in 2010 stood out as they raced at home, and for the GP riders (who get to race in Europe the rest of the time) took all three motos in 2006 and this year.

Can the GP riders finally turn the tables on the AMA riders again in Germany in 2013 and move to 14 wins to 13?
