De Dycker favorite for this weekend - Belgian championship

Press release Friday 28th March 2008 By Tom Jacobs

Let’s not beat around the bush. The favourite for next Sunday’s opening race of the United Telecom Trophy, Belgian MX Nationals, is of course Ken De Dycker (Suzuki-Teka WMX Team). The Suzuki rider won already the International at Grobbendonk, one heat in Hawkstone, the Gemert Round of the Jumbo Dutch Open MX and last weekend’s overall in Wuustwezel.

Being a strong athlete means De Dycker is often at his best in real tough conditions. Not to mention that he won last year’s East-Flanders round at Moerbeke-Waas.

Reigning World Champion Steve Ramon (Suzuki-Teaka WMX Team) had a pretty good pre season himself and is on the lookout for his first overall victory of 2008. Marvin van Daele (Teka-Suzuki) had adapted himself to his new Suzuki.

Proof of that was his double heat victory during the second round of the Jumbo Dutch Open MX at Oldebroek on Easter Monday. We should also expect some fireworks from Italian David Philippaerts (Yamaha- Monster).

Philippaerts has to defend Yamaha’s honour after team mate Josh Coppins was sidelined due to a foot injury. Philippaerts won this season’s International race at Mantova and won during the Assoluti d’Italia round (at Castiglione de Lago).

GPKR-Kawasaki rider Kevin Strijbos (see interview) makes his return to racing at Beervelde just like Estonian Tanel Leok (Kawasaki Racing Team).

Dark horses for a place on the rostrum are former MX3 World Champ Sven Breugelmans (JM Racing-KTM), Kristof Salaets (G-Racing Promotion) and multitalented New Zealander Scotty Columb (MTM Racing-Suzuki).

Manuel Priem (Kawasaki Racing Team) a member of the local club, got injured at Wuustwezel and will assess his injury (a torn muscle in the upper right leg) on Saturday morning.

Anyhow Beervelde will start the championship with a bang!

Radson MX2 Trophy Jeremy Van Horebeek (Champ-KTM) is the clear favourite for Sunday’s opening round of the Radson MX2 Trophy.

The Championship promised some excitement but due to injuries of guys like Joël Roelants, Dennis Verbruggen, Dennis Dierckx and Tom De Belder, it’s highly unlikely that another Belgian rider can provide some flak to Van Horebeek’s domination.

Luckily there will be some foreign opposition on hand. South- African Wyatt Avis (LS Motorsport-Honda) is set to make his come-back after two weeks of injury misery. Shannon Terreblanche and Sasha Naude are two other South-Africans that could make a dent.

Furthermore Brits Shaun Simpson (KTM UK) and Jason Dougan (Motovision) and Frenchmen Jeremy Tarraux (Silveraction-KTM), Valentin Teillet (JM Racing-KTM), Axel Alletru (JM Junior-KTM) and Kounsith Vongsana (Bud Racing-Kawasaki)

Beervelde will also see the introduction of the MXWorld Holeshot Award.

This 200 Euro Bonus will go to the rider who takes the holeshot in the first heat of the Radson MX2 Trophy.
