Season Statistics to date - MX1 and MX2

Press release Wednesday 23th April 2008 By Daniele Rizzi

After round two of the World championships here are the season statistics. MX1 With GPKR’s Sebastien Pourcel taking his first pole of 2008, the Green Team sealed their third consecutive pole in Bellpuig after Tanel Leok’s records from 2006 and 2007. Things changed on the wet Sunday, with Steve Ramon of Teka Suzuki WMX1 winning the opening heat and also the overall after moto two was cancelled.

The defending MX1 World Champion collected his maiden MX1 GP win handing Suzuki the provisional supremacy in the manufacturers’ world standings. Team mate and Dutch GP winner Ken de Dycker was also on the podium in third, behind a solid Yamaha Monster Motocross’ David Philippaerts who celebrated his first Yamaha podium.

With De Dycker still holding the series’ lead, Yamaha Monster Motocross’ Joshua Coppins gets ready to chase the leader as he tried to do in Bellpuig, where he clocked the fastest lap during the race.

Though Coppins never made it to the lead of the race, which was only Ramon and AXO KTM Silver Action Jonathan Barragan’s privilege, with the latter eventually stopping trackside due to a bike problem.

MX2 Winning the qualifying heat alongside KTM fellow rider Anthony Boissiere of HDI Motocross and finishing first in moto one, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tyla Rattray could keep the red plate even if the second moto was not what the South African expected.

With Ricci Racing Yamaha’s Davide Guarneri winning the final moto and Rattray getting stuck in the mud, the Italian eventually took the overall to secure his second career GP win at the end of a surprising weekend –aside from the unexpected weather conditions, Guarneri raced with a broken right collarbone ligament.

Guarneri also contributed to the first 2008 GP win of Yamaha, winner of last year’s MX2 manufacturers’ World Title.

The Spanish podium was completed by other two riders coming back to the top three in the likes of 3C Racing’s Manuel Monni (second) and Molson Kawasaki Racing’s Stephen Sword, while CLS’ Steven Frossard clocked the fastest lap during the race before having a bike problem.

The third round of the series will take place in Agueda, Portugal, this weekend at the Crossódromo Internacional Do Casarão.

The Crossódromo Internacional Do Casarão in Agueda is a unique track with a lot of character, partially due to its particular red ground which is not usual among the FIM Motocross World Championship venues.

The race track is managed by local organizer Ginasio Clube de Agueda, taking care of lots of sports events happening in the area. Last year on Agueda’s intermediate ground Kevin Strijbos (MX1) and Antonio Cairoli (MX2) took victory in sunny and hot weather conditions, something the series has been missing this year since the opening round in Valkenswaard.

The weather forecast for the weekend is actually sunny. The Portuguese town of Agueda sits close to the Western edge of the European continent and has about 15000 inhabitants.

Its location is in between the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains, making Agueda a popular stop for the on the go tourists as the town is also close to spas. The closest town is Oporto, being 70 kilometres North of Agueda, but Coimbra is only 40 kilometers to the South and capital and Lisbon is 250 kilometers to the South West.
