2008 Unites Telecom Trophy - Belgian Finale
Press release Friday 19th September 2008 By Tom Jacobs
Ken De Dycker leads the points race and reigning Belgian motocross champion Steve Ramon holds the smallest of margins over KRT-Kawasaki’s Manuel Priem. A situation where every one of these riders still has all his chances to win te title. With three heats to go there’s a maximum of 75 points to be won.
The totally new track makes it pretty hard to predict who will be Belgian Champion come 5 o’clock Sunday afternoon. But there will be plenty of riders who could spoil it for any of the three leaders. Amongst them Clément Desalle, Cédric Melotte and Patrick Caps.
Given the fact that Desalle took the win in Nismes he could be on the top step again at Mont-Saint-Guibert. For Cédric Melotte it will be his one and only appearance in the 2008 United Telecom Trophy.
New world champions During the final of the 2008 United Telecom Trophy there will be a lot of attention from public and press alike, for KTM riders Sven Breugelmans and Tyla Rattray, respectively the 2008 MX3 and MX2.
For Breugelmans it’s his second World title after winning it in 2005. For Tyla Rattray it meant his first ever World title. Rattray who lives in Geel, Belgium during the season will race in MX1 from 2009 on.
Mont-Saint-Guibert will be an excellent opportunity for him to take in some MX1 experience. His future teammate in the Red Bull-KTM MX1 team, Max Nagl, will be riding at Mont-Saint-Guibert as well.
The German took his first ever MX1 GP win in a convincing way last Sunday. Kiwi, Josh Coppins will be a podium contender after being on the podium in every round he took part in.
Estonian Tanel Leok will also be a force to be reckoned with as well, especially since he took his first GP win three weeks ago in Dublin.
The Belgian Radson MX2 title will be decided this Sunday on RMC Pierreux’s completely new track at the Shanks quarry in Mont-Saint-Guibert.
Like almost every race this season we can look forward to a Champ-KTM duel between Jeremy Van Horebeek and Joël Roelants.
The question in the title could proof to be rather rethorical as reigning Belgian MX2 champion, Jeremy Van Horebeek holds a 33 points advantage over teammate Joël Roelants.
However, Roelants’ recent form has been dazzling resulting in the first ever Belgian podium in an MX2 GP since 2005. Even with the first and second places in the final standings looking sure the battle for third place is still wide open.
Dennis Verbruggen is currently third with 100 points, one more than his Shineray-Yamaha teammate Nick Triest. Triest holds a 7 point advantage over Kevin Wouts (LS Motors-Honda) and 9 points over Jurgen Wybo (MX Planet-Suzuki).
The battle for the other top 10 places in the Radson MX2 Trophy will be interesting as well with some money at stake. Other names to watch will be Valentin Teillet (European Champion MX2), Matiss Karro (Junior MX world Champion) and Evgeniy Bobryshev (3rd in Kester round of the Radson MX2 Trophy)
Last chance for the local riders Up until now the young Walloon riders didn’t perform as expected in the Radson Trophy. The Radson Trophy series final in Mont-Saint-Guibert will be their last opportunity this year, to show their talents.
Maybe we can expect the RMC Pierreux riders Vincent Collet and Kevin Fors in the top 10. Collet as always been riding well at the old track. It remains to be seen if he can mix in the battle for the win at the sand quarry.
We will know around 16h30 on Sunday afternoon whether Jeremy Van Horebeek will be Belgian MX2 champion for the second time in a row or not.
