Lierop Grand Prix of The Year - Youthstream

Press release Thursday 23th October 2008 By Daniele Rizzi

With a fantastic 2008 season having come to an end Youthstream is proud to announce the organizers of the year. For the MX1/MX2 World Championships the award goes to Lierop, the Netherlands, as Santiago de Chile will take the award as the best MX3 World Championship organizer. Pleven, Bulgaria, is again the best organizer in the whole SuperMoto World Championship.

Each organizer will be awarded during the FIM Off Road Awards taking place in Monaco, Montecarlo, on December 6.

Youthstream President Giuseppe Luongo stated:

“MAC Lierop has been for a long time one of our best organizers and this year they really deserve to win the Award for the best MX1/MX2 organizer of the year. This award is dedicated to all the volunteers and all the members of the club, who - thanks to their work - have brought the quality of the Grand Prix of the Netherlands to such a high level. A special thanks goes to Wim Smits, the former president and the true engine of the club, where with his passion he not only created this wonderful and unique venue but he is also a great advisor for us during the entire season with how to improve Motocross in general.

“The MX3 World Championship event held in Chile is the confirmation of the great job many Federations and organizers do all over the world. It shows that it is really the right time Motocross has to go global and touch all Continents, not only Europe and USA. We want to thank Mr. Sebastiàn ETCHEVERRY V and all his staff for this wonderful event and we really hope to improve together every year.

“The SuperMoto Grand Prix of Bulgaria and the SuperMoto of Nations held in Pleven are perfect examples for the entire SuperMoto world; this venue shows the ideal race track and organization, it also shows a special way of welcoming the people. If all the SuperMoto organizers can follow Pleven’s example then I am sure the FIM SuperMoto World Championship will make a huge step forward. We want to thank Mr. Rumen Petkov (Chairman of the Organizing Committee) and Mr. Bogdan Nikolov (President of BMF) for their passion, their involvement and their support towards our sports. “We want to thank also all the other organizers because thanks to their work we have such great FIM World Championships. The three organizers above won the first prize in their categories but all the others are very near this achievement too. The level is really very high and every year the organizers improve their infrastructures, their race-tracks, their organization and they really work very closely with Youthstream with the sole goal of making our sports bigger and better every year.”

FIM/CMS President Dr. Wolfgang Srb continued:

“I am very happy that these prestigious awards go to the organizers of Lierop for MX1/2, Santiago de Chile for MX3 and Pleven for SuperMoto. Wim Smits and Frank van Tulder, since many years the masterminds behind Lierop, organized their events on a top level since the very beginning. They are great people who love the sport so much and they deserve the award.

“Santiago de Chile was the first MX3 organizer outside of Europe. The Club did an excellent job and helped to promote the FIM Motocross World Championship in South America. A very well deserved award.

“The SuperMoto Circuit in Pleven is the showcase of our sport, showing already the future of SuperMoto. The all-tarmac track, including the futuristic sky-section, is undisputedly the very best venue in the world. The Bulgarian Federation and the President Bogdan Nikolov did a fantastic job and they deserve all the credit.”

Hosting the penultimate round of the MX1/MX2 series and the last of the Women’s World Championship Lierop hosted great racing on September 7, the date of the event taking place in the Netherlands.

Home rider Marc de Reuver’s win in the MX1 class added extra excitement as the 35,000 weekend spectators enjoyed two days of hard fought motocross on the demanding Dutch sand.

Tyla Rattray won the MX2 GP as Livia Lancelot became the first ever Women’s World Champion carving Lierop’s name in stone as the first ever venue to crown a female World Champion.

The work carried out by the MAC Lierop has been excellent since they played host to their first solo GP in 1996 but this year’s Grand Prix of Benelux stood out in particular courtesy of a perfect combination of all the key factors making a race weekend unforgettable such as great racing, good working structures hosting the spectators and the World Championship collective, solid media coverage and crowd attendance.

Organizing a World Motocross Championship race for its first time the Chilean Motorcycle Federation put together an outstanding event at Laguna Caren in Santiago de Chile, the capital city of the Republic of Chile.

On August 2nd and 3rd more than 25,000 spectators turned out to watch the 12th round of the MX3 World Championship with Cristian Beggi winning on the 1600 metre long sandy course. Courtesy of that victory the Italian moved up to first in the Championship to lose the Title from Sven Breugelmans four rounds later in Germany.

The enthusiastic organizer arranged each single detail in order to accommodate the World Championship riders who all had extremely positive comments about this overseas meeting and look forward to a comeback in 2009.

A very well set up paddock was another source of interest for the spectators who could meet personally the best MX3 riders in the World after watching the great racing at Laguna Caren.

Being built in 2007 with a unique sky section featuring the dirt covered with asphalt the Dolna Mitropolia SuperMoto facility saw its first world class event in the same year in the likes of the Bulgarian SuperMoto Grand Prix.

At that time the hard working BMF-Bulgarian Motorcycle Federation organized a great event setting up a strong base for the highest rated SuperMoto race of each year: the FIM SuperMoto of Nations.

Once the 2008 calendar featuring the SMoN in Pleven on October 12 was released the BMF started to fine tune the Dolna Mitropolia in order to host the best riders in the SuperMoto circus.

A great event got underway in perfect weather conditions as team Italy (Lazzarini, Gozzini, Pignotti) wrapped up the Francesco Zerbi Trophy for their second time on Sunday.

As the Italians pulled away in the three heats a dogfight went on for the second and third places with France (Bidart, Goguet, Blot) ending runner up and Bulgaria (Georgiev, Hlad, Tonchev) making it a dream weekend for the 15,000 spectators by taking the third step of the podium.

The combination of the healthy support from the local Government and the superb work of the Bulgarian Motorcycling Federation contribute in keeping up the high standards of Pleven as all Superiders look forward to racing on the Bulgarian course, by far the best SuperMoto facility in the world.
