Scotty Columb looking for help - GP dream continues?

Press release Saturday 21th November 2008 By Andy McGechan

There may be one less New Zealander racing motocross in Europe next season. With a worldwide tightening of belts and escalating costs, it now seems increasingly unlikely that Queenstown's Scotty Columb will again rip across the tracks of Europe in pursuit of MX1 world championship glory in 2009. That is unless he can find a major sponsor, and soon.

The 25-year-old finished 29th in the MX1 world championships this season, although he "would like to have done better" and he certainly believes he could have. Riding for the MTM Suzuki team, essentially a privateer outfit, the tough Kiwi is now in a race to find the cash to back his campaign.

"The cost of racing the world championships is very high," he said. "I have to bring a lot of money to help the team. Only the top 15 riders get what's called 'travel assistance', so me and my team need to come up with thousands of Euro to get to all the GPs, including the ones outside Europe -- the USGP, South Africa and Brazil next season. Then there's the entry fee, hotels, mechanics, transport. Everything costs. I need a rich father or a big sponsor and I haven't got either of those."
