Grand Prix of Turkey - A cultural change

The Turkish Grand Prix, one of the most awaited meetings in the 2009 calendar, was presented last Wednesday to the Turkish media at the glittering Ciragan Palace, a building from the Ottoman Empire. After more than 50 years of history the World Motocross Championship will visit this country for the first time ever making the 2009 Grand Prix of Turkey an event for the history books.

This aspect plus the many improvements to the 2009 Championship such as the 40 riders at the MX1 and MX2 gates, the double floor pit-lane and an increased TV coverage will turn further attention to the GP.

Turkey and Istanbul have a great potential with just the city having around 15 million inhabitants who have already expressed their interest in having the Motocross World Championship in Turkey.

Moreover the worldwide televised Motocross series will contribute in opening a global window on the whole area which will be under the spotlight on the forthcoming April 12 weekend.

The presentation gathered crowds of media who received a warm welcome from the organizing committee and the spokesmen Mr. Faruk Berksan, Owner of Hezarfen Airport and board member of TMF; Mr. Enis Erdem, General Manager of Youth and Sport Department of Istanbul Municipality; Mr. Kenan Sofuoðlu, 2007 Supersport World Champion; Mr. Süleyman Memnun, President of TMF; Dr. Wolfgang Srb, President of CMS (FIM); Mr. Hamit Abbasoðlu, Vice President of TMF; Mr. Daniele Rizzi, Youth Stream Press Coordinator.

The race, which receives a solid support from the Istanbul Municipality and the Turkish Motorcycling Federation, will take place on the Istanbul-Hezarfen race track at the Hezarfen Airport-Catalca, Istanbul-Turkey.
