Rider comments - Grand Prix of Catalunya

Press release Monday 18th May 2009 By PR

It was another day of celebration for the KTM team as their riders dominated yet another Grand Prix. After a terrible start to the season for the orange family the sun of Spain and a welcome return to form for Jonathan Barragan and Jeremy Van Horebeek. Here are some rider comments.

Jonathan Barragan

"It feels great to win here at home at Bellpuig, and it is a big honour to be the first Spanish winner of a Spanish MX GP. I did have a crash in the second race and some guys passed me but by then my shoulder was starting to give me some problems. It was also very hot today, but that didn't really bother me because I am quite used to this kind of weather."

Jeremy Van Horebeek

"This was a real surprise for me.I was already feeling well and strong on Saturday and I knew I was very fast. I was so fast in the last five minutes of the second moto that I didn't even think about winning. Now I feel good and very fit and although I hope to stay in the top and pick up lots of points, I won't be putting any pressure on myself. I want to thank the team for that,"

 Rui Goncalves

"But still the best birthday present I could give myself is being on the podium. I don't aim to always win, but I do try to get as many points as possible."

Anthony Boissiere

"I had a good start in the first race and I could overtake quite a few riders. Then I took the lead in the second race and I was able to hang onto it until the end. This is a result that has made me feel very strong. I won my last moto in 2005 but there's a big difference between the Anthony Boissiere of 2005 and what I am today."

Antonio Cairoli

"In the first moto I made two mistakes and when I crashed with Josh it was my fault because I was going for his line and just caught his back wheel. With Mackenzie the first time I think it was a normal pass but he cut the line and we both went down. My fuel tank was actually damaged after that so I was going easy on the gas because I did not want to run out before the end of the race. I still could make the best lap-time and the moment with Josh was a shame, it also hurt some of my ribs although the pain was not so bad by the start of the second race. I lost some time at the beginning of the second moto but I found the right lines and even copied a few from Jonathan when he overtook me for a while! I felt really good, and when I saw Nagl make a mistake I pushed hard for the win."

David Philippaerts

"I did not expect this because my thumb gave me a lot of problems yesterday, but today I could ride well and quite easily and I am really happy for the result; it is a bit of a surprise. I did not do any training since Portugal, only treatment, so I felt a bit tired towards the end of the second moto but obviously I am really pleased with two third positions. My doctor believes that I should be almost back to normal for the next Grand Prix."

Josh Coppins

"I had some good starts and my riding was not too bad but I did not have much power today; I did the best I could do. I am not sure what the problem is at the moment but I felt tired and struggled in the second moto. There is not much more I can really say."

Tanel Leok

"A bad day. I felt good and the speed was fine but I was getting things wrong. In the second moto I hit someone's back wheel and he spun out so I was stuck behind him and was really far back, I crashed again and then had a stone jamming the rear brake so after two laps without a brake I stopped to take it out. I fell again later after that, I tried too hard to get back near the front and was making mistakes; it was not my day."

Max Nagl

"I still had a good race and my lap times were up with the leaders so I still have to be satisfied with that first moto. Then I got away really well in the second race and I led the whole time. I had a 13 second lead going into the final two laps then a lapped rider crashed in front of me and that spoilt my chances of winning. Of course by then I was also tired and it was very hot. I can still be satisfied with my second place in the second moto,"

Steven Frossard

‘I had good lap times on Saturday during the practice sessions and I was expecting a great result here but my fifteenth position on the grid didn’t help me with the starts. Unfortunately during the qualifying race Paulin crashed and I couldn’t avoid him. The track preparation was not good; there were just two metres of dry line where you had to stay, so it was difficult to pass. I finished fifth and sixth and scored good points in both races, it could have been better but I stayed too long behind Guarneri in the first race and Van Horebeek in the second. I lost my rhythm a little bit behind them and couldn’t pass them.’

Gautier Paulin

‘It was a difficult weekend. I had an average start in the opening race, passed a couple of guys in the first lap but crashed on the second and again lost many positions. I came back to sixteenth, just enough to score several points. My second start was much better and I was in the top twenty when I a bike landed on top of mine! I lost quite a bit of time as I didn’t want any marshal to touch my bike, and came back from last to sixteenth once more. We lost the red plate today but the championship will be long, the most important thing for me is the way I raced today and my determination is the same whether my front plate is red or black. Now I need to secure some good qualifying results because it’s so important for Sunday’s races, and if I missed it this weekend it’s my fault and only mine as I crashed.’

David Vuillemin

‘The last time I came here was in 1998 and Bellpuig has not changed, with a dry line among the mud, even if we have a sunny weekend! I didn’t have a good qualification, I hit several neutrals during the race and finished only fifteenth. I had my best start so far in the first heat, then took a good rhythm and came up to fifth right behind Coppins during the last laps. The next start was perhaps the worst but I passed Swanepoel and finished close to Desalle and Coppins. I scored my best GP result, that’s good for me mentally and I’m sure that I can reach a top five position with decent starts as I was strong physically again here.’

Gregory Aranda

"I came back to the pit’s frustrated from the opening race, I had a good start but when I arrived in the waves section Leok and De Dycker were on the ground and it was impossible for me to avoid them, there was no yellow flag! My second heat was much better, I had to slow down for three laps but then I found the energy to finish tenth. Each weekend I feel physically stronger, I’ve to continue working and I’m pleased to see that I’m regularly in the top ten now.’

Gareth Swanepoel

‘I had a really good first moto ; I was a little bit lucky as several guys crashed, they put me in a good position and I came close to Josh Coppins in fourth position. Vuillemin passed me but I was happy to finish in sixth place, eighteen seconds from the winner. I had a very good start in the next race but went from fifth to tenth and that was not good, it was a bad lap; after twenty five minutes I felt tired and Vuillemin passed me but overall it’s a good day. I feel faster every week on the 450, I just need now to have good start and strong beginning to the races to get top five results.’
