Grand Prix of Great Britain - Rider Comments
Press release Monday 01st June 2009 By PR
Marvin Musquin
"I am feeling very confident. I liked the track and I am happy with my bike. Yesterday I knew I was fast when I won the qualifying race and could choose the first gate. I managed to take the holeshot in the first race and I put in some good lap times."
Rui Goncalves
"This was a positive weekend for me although after getting a good start in the first race I did have some problems with arm pump. Then before the second race we did some changes to the bike set up. I managed to get the holeshot and I rode my own race. I got passed at the end but I am still very satisfied with my ride today. I know I am strong mentally and physically and I am looking forward to tackling the next races with the same positive attitude."
Mickael Pichon
“Everything is better than I expected; the speed was OK and my physical condition also because I could see that the second moto was alright. For sure I was tired but I was riding smooth and not pushing too hard. When the guys like Coppins and a few others passed me they were not pulling away and I was having fun, more so than the first moto. It was nice to come back to the GPs and see many people who I had been working with for a lot of years; it was pretty cool to be here. The new Honda is really good but I think we can always do better and improve it; everything can be better in life! I am going to try and work on it, for me it is not so important but if it helps Kevin and whoever else then I will be glad.”
Clement Desalle
“I am a bit disappointed to lose second position by just one point but this podium is another good result for my championship standing. I made a mistake in the second moto and this was a shame because I lost contact with David and second position. My starts were good and this is a positive part of the day.”
David Philippaerts
"For me this is a great day after some difficult GPs. It feels like a long time, too long, since I last won at Loket last year. I almost forgot the feeling! The track was softer here last year and it was definitely easier on Saturday than it was today. I had some good starts but this has happened quite often this season and I owe a big thanks to the team for this; for sure to start at the front makes the job easier."
Josh Coppins
"Not too bad today and I felt better than the last few weeks; there was an improvement here and hopefully I will be able to get back on the box in France. The first moto was pretty eventful because a rock hit my left collarbone and that was pretty sore and I also broke some spokes on my front wheel when I clashed with Desalle. The wheel was a bit wobbly and I got some arm-pump so the front group got away. There were some good points about today."
Ken De Dycker
"This was a very tough day for me. The track was very bumpy and with all the jumps and stones it was hard to hold onto the bars and also withstand the pain. I could not have an injection so I just had to get on with it. I also felt the effects of not being able to ride for three weeks. Now my hands are covered with blisters, but if I feel OK during this week, then I might try to get on the bike before France."
Antonio Cairoli
"I am very happy actually because after the crash yesterday I was thinking it was not possible to race, so 8th and 10th is good. Barragan and De Dycker did not do so well so that was also a positive thing. I was still sore after Spain and then on Saturday things got worse, so I hope to be OK for France. I did not like the track here. It was too difficult to overtake and in many places almost one line. It took a lot of time for me to close the gap to the guys in front. Still, there was another Yamaha win, thanks to David and that is good."
Tom Church
“It’s been a pretty disappointing day all round, what makes it even worse is that it has been in front of so many home fans who were right behind us and really wanted us to be up there and amongst it. I didn’t get the best of starts in the first race, but I slowly made my way forward despite it being quite difficult to pass, and was looking like I might have made it into the top fifteen before I punctured two laps from the end. The atmosphere has been great all day, so I was really hoping I could put things right in the second moto. Again after an average start I pulled my way through into a potential top fifteen finish only to crash in the whoops with just two laps to go.”
Jason Dougan
“If I am honest I have not liked the track all weekend, it had too many stones and it was almost impossible to find places to pass. The first race went OK, I gated around fifteenth and managed to maintain that position come the finish after battling my way forward and then slipping back towards the end. In the second moto I hit someone on the first turn and damaged my rear brake, whilst it was not working well I managed to still make up some positions before it totally went, which then meant I was forced to pull in. Overall it’s not been the best of days, especially as it was our home GP when you hope to make the most of the advantage that the supporters give you.”
Davide Guarneri
"I really did not enjoy this track. It was so rough and the lines were not good and I found it very difficult with my style. I felt that I did not have full energy today so maybe my iron levels are a little low; I am tired now. I had a bad start in the second moto and made some mistakes. This was not a great GP but at least I took some points again. I really want to get on that podium but it was not going to happen here today."
Nico Aubin
"I felt good this weekend and in the practice I was fast but someone crashed in front of me in the qualification heat. I was far behind and came back to 27th but it meant that the starts for Sunday would be very difficult. I was something like 22nd at the beginning of the first moto and came back to 11th and that was a strong race because it is not easy to pass here. I actually had a good start in the second moto but on the third lap I made a little mistake and crashed and another rider completed the double and hit my shoulder. I had a lot of pain and could not ride anymore. I have a problem with the right shoulder because I have little muscle there; I just hope I will be OK for Ernee."
Zach Osborne
"I definitely knew coming into this weekend that it would not be easy. I took a pain killing injection before the race but it could only do so much. The whole team made their best effort to try and salvage something for the championship but it is far out of reach now and I will focus on recovering fully and being able to come back and win. I hope to be 100% by the German Grand Prix in three weeks time."
Billy Mackenzie
"The first race was a bit of a disaster for me, as I couldn't hang onto the bike with the pain I was in. I've had a lot of treatment on my hand recently, and it's been confirmed that I've completely detached the collateral ligament in my thumb, which is why it's taking some time to heal. The doctor gave me pain relief before race one, but he didn't go deep enough to numb the joint and it quickly wore off as I rode. I was feeling really annoyed with myself, and I had a small crash, but my race was over only a few laps in because of the pain. Before race two we evaluated the situation, and spoke to the doctor, who gave me an injection much deeper into my hand. I had no pain, but I just suffered with a bit of arm pump mid race. The crowd was a lot more behind me this time and this definitely helped, so I managed to get my pace back to finish in fifth, which to be honest I really didn’t think was possible today after how much pain I was in during race one. It was definitely a good finish to a bad day."
Bryan Mackenzie
"The problem in qualifying wasn't anyone's fault, it was just one of those things, but it made it difficult for me today. I got a bad start and was right at the back of the pack, so I got my head down to try to work my way through. I was behind a group of slower riders, but once I got past them all I felt like I'd been holding my breath the whole time. By the time I got a bit of clear track I could ride how I want, rather than switching lines to make passes, arm pump began to set in and I finished in 19th. In the second race I had a monstrous crash on the first lap and got run over, so I ended up right at the back. My bars were quite bent so I just did what I could and my aim was to get back in the points. As much as I'm disappointed, I'm glad I got away with that big crash, the bike is working really well and although 19th and 21st isn't great, it's a start for us."
Gareth Swanepoel
“I’m not really happy with my results here as I could have done better after two great starts. During the opening heat my rhythm wasn’t so great after twenty five minutes, and I lost two positions. I nearly claimed my first MX1 holeshot in the second race, but Nagl pushed me wide and I was seventh for a laps. Then I crashed and the bike was stuck in a deep rut, it took me time to start again. I pushed for some points and I got them; now I am confident with the starts as I know it’s possible to get a holeshot. I like the tracks at Ernée and Teutschenthal, and my goal there will be to score top five results.”
Tanel Leok
"I had a tough position in the start gate and although I got a good jump for the first moto I ended up being pushed quite wide. It was really difficult to come from 15th to 8th. I was feeling good and my riding was going well but it was hard to pass. I had a better start in the second race but made some mistakes half way through the moto. The end was OK. Overall I had a bit of bad luck on Saturday and it did not help me today."
Gregory Aranda
“I had good speed during the first heat, I posted the third fastest lap but after a start in eighteenth position it was difficult to do better than ninth. My second start was better, I was seventh but in the last ten minutes I couldn’t keep the rhythm and both Cairoli and Leok passed me. It was a good weekend overall, yesterday the track was perfect and I was the only rider to jump one section; but they changed it for the race. It’s a pity that the track had mainly one line due to the watering, it was so nice during the first practice session.”
David Vuillemin
“Last week in Brou during the French series a stone hit my finger during the third race, it was painful but I thought that it was not too serious. I had a little pain this week but on the bike it was impossible to ride due to the vibration; I put some padding on my gloves for the second practice session, but it was too painful. I will have some exams on Monday to check it out and I expect to be in Ernée next week.”
