Red Bull KTM Factory rider Cooper Webb has been through two years of hell. I still remember Webb leaving the press room at the 2016 Monster Energy Motocross of Nations. He probably cost Team USA victory that day, as tough as it sounds, and I remember feeling for him as he fought back tears. I tried to stop him to ask for an interview and wish him the best, but there was no way Cooper was stopping to talk to anyone on that warm day in Italy.
Now, two and a half years later, the likeable former AMA 250 Motocross champion is back with a number one place. He has mentioned in the past how Jeffrey Herlings had inspired him, having beaten Herlings in the 2016 MX2 USGP at Charlotte Motorspeedway and then seeing Herlings rule the World for two years.
Now, with a supercross championship to his name, and the motocross season starting, you know that Herlings will remain in his mind, and hopefully, he gets to line-up against the fastest man on the planet again in Assen, at this years MXoN.
Maybe Assen won't be a success story as the sand is Herlings ground, but I sure hope he is back for the 2020 version when Team USA are back on hard-pack in France, and in with a shot at the Chamberlain Trophy.
Below are some Simon Cudby images of Webb and his victory.
