AMA Supercross - Multiple Winners

Posted on December 28, 2021

Just 11 men have been able to win the AMA supercross championship more than once since the series began nearly 50 years ago. 25 different riders have won championships in the 48 seasons of the American indoor title.

While Jeremy McGrath clearly stands as the greatest supercross rider of all time, there are a number of riders who showed brilliance in their own era’s.

McGrath with seven AMA Supercross championships from 1993 until 2000 was near unbeatable and only over confidence saw him fail to win eight titles in a row, when he moved from Honda to Suzuki just a few weeks before the opening round of the 1997 AMA title chase and came up short when he couldn’t prepare the bike to his liking.

Ricky Carmichael, who was the first man to really put McGrath in his place, replacing the supercross legend at the top in 2001 when the Kawasaki rider captured his first of five AMA supercross titles, RC could possibly have passed McGraths supercross title wins, but retired with burnout in 2007.

Two Ryan’s, Villopoto and Dungey won four AMA supercross championships each and Jeff Stanton and Bob Hannah won three each. Chad Reed, James Stewart and Cooper Webb have two supercross titles each.

14 men have won the AMA supercross championship on one occasion, those being, Gary Semics, Steve Stackable, Pierre Karsmakers, Jimmy Ellis, Jimmy Weinert, Mike Bell, Mark Barnett, Donnie Hansen, David Bailey, Johnny O’Mara, Jean-Michel Bayle, Jeff Emig, Jason Anderson and Eli Tomac.

The big question in 2022, can Cooper Webb take it to three wins and line up alongside Jeff Stanton and Bob Hannah in the list below or will Eli Tomac or maybe Jason Anderson make it two wins and join the likes of James Stewart, Chad Reed, Rick Johnson, Jeff Ward and Cooper Webb.

Proving that beating the yanks at their own game isn’t easy, only Pierre Karsmakers, Jean Michel Bayle and Chad Reed have been able to win as international riders.

In most people opinion, it was the 1980s that proved to be the most competitive with eight different guys winning in that 10 year period, including AMA legends Mark Barnett, Donnie Hansen, David Bailey, Johnny O'Mara, Jeff Ward, Rick Johnson and Jeff Stanton.

It does pain me when people say this 2022 field is the strongest ever. I can only imagine it is 20 something year old kids saying this, who never saw the golden era of AMA supercross.
