And They Climb - Gajser and Prado
Posted on June 25, 2019
And they continue to climb, Jorge Prado into 18th place in the all-time GP winners list and Tim Gajser into 25th place, knocking Seb Tortelli 20, and Hakan Carlqvist 20 out of the top 25.
It isn't hard to be impressed, as the 22 year old HRC rider and the 18 year old Red Bull KTM Factory rider win GP after GP. Prado with nine GP wins in 2019 and Gajser with six.
Prado also become the third most successful current GP rider behind Cairoli and Herlings in GP wins, moving past Clement Desalle, who has 23. No doubt, Gajser will also move past the Belgian in coming weeks.
When you think of small bike greats, one of the best of all time was tiny Belgian Gaston Rahier, who has 30 GP wins (from memory 29 in 125 and one in 250), and three 125cc championships, or of course Herlings, with his 84 wins. Amazing to think that Prado will more than likely pass Rahier this year in GP wins, and become one of the winningest 125/MX2 riders of all time. Pity he can't join Rahier in titles, but that isn't allowed with the ruling of having to move up after two MX2 titles.
Cairoli with his 89 GP wins has 26 in MXGP and 39 in MX1 and 24 in MX2, so Prado passed the Italians small bike tally in Germany last weekend.
The greatest 125/MX2 rider of all time Jeffrey Herlings has an amazing 61 wins in MX2, so no chance Prado passes that with the rule of having to move up to MXGP after his second title comes.
With eight rounds remaining, Prado could end up with 33 GP wins, and that would see him pass, Heikki Mikkola 32, Gaston Rahier 30, Georges Jobe 28, Andre Malherbe 28, Paul Friedrichs 28, Dave Strijbos 27, Alessio Chiodi 26 and Jeff Smith 25. Damn, just typing that makes me excited for his challenge.
For Gajser it might be a little more difficult, as when Herlings and Cairoli return, fit and ready, they might have something to say about his GP victories, but lets say he wins another four or five, which is very possible, then he would be around 25 GP wins, and his place in history will be long secured as a great of the sport.
Do you realize that would mean, in this era of MXGP and MX2, we would have four riders, Antonio Cairoli, Jeffrey Herlings, Tim Gajser and Jorge Prado who would be considered among the best ever!! Impressive and no doubt why MXGP is considered so healthy at the moment.
