Andrea Adamo - Short Break

Defending World MX2 champion Andrea Adamo hasn’t had the best of defences of his 250 crown. A championship he won in brilliant and somewhat surprising fashion as many expected the Belgian Jago Geerts to be crowned when the 2023 season began.

The always friendly and likeable Italian sits in sixth place in the MX2 standings, with 457 points, which is currently more than 200 behind series leader Kay De Wolf and nearly 100 behind fifth placed rider, Liam Everts.

For Adamo, who looked so strong in 2023, his results have never reached the heights of last year, his best being a Trentino qualification race win, and then 1-4 in round six in Spain.

He has picked up another moto win in the opening Spanish round near Madrid and a nice 2-3 in the opening round in Lombok, but it has very much been a rollercoaster performance until now.

Having missed the MXGP of Lommel 10 days ago, due to an injury he picked up in Loket a week earlier, he did tell MXlarge that he is looking forward to restarting his season and maybe the short break will give him that fresh beginning he needs. Still signed on with the Red Bull KTM factory for 2025, he doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone, but he would very much like to return in Sweden this coming weekend with some momentum and a strong performance.

MXlarge: It has been a difficult year for you, after winning the championship last year and putting yourself in such a good position and making a name for yourself in the sport. Being a World champion and all the celebrations and then a year like this. How difficult has it been?

Adamo: It has been tough, but not ever year is the same and I had a rough winter, and it didn’t go smooth and that is a bit the reason why my season hasn’t been like last year and not consistent like it was in 2023. I have shown in many motos, that I have the speed, because already in the second GP I won a moto, so I had the speed, but you need more than just speed. You need to have the speed, the fitness, the bike needs to be okay, everything needs to be on point, to be leading and fighting for a championship. So, yes, I was missing some pieces of the puzzle this year and that compromised some things. For me mentally, it hasn’t been so difficult.

MXlarge: You are still the World champion and won a World championship and that will always be very special.

Adamo: Yes, I won a World championship and I still feel like I am the World champion. For this year the championship is gone, and I just want to recover well and come back for the other races strong and to slowly prepare for next year.

MXlarge: Maybe this little break, missing Lommel, is actually good for you to restart your season?

Adamo: Yes, actually, we try and take every negative a positive and while this injury hasn’t helped, there are positive things, and I can now breath and come back for the rest of the championship and have a good fight and maybe win some GPs. I will be back in Sweden, and I had time to recover.

MXLarge: How did your injury in Loket come about?

Adamo: Many people think I got injured in the crash in the race in Loket, but in fact, I crashed in the warm-up. The last lap of the warm-up I had a big, big crash and really smashed myself against the ground and I was in a lot of pain, but I still wanted to race. All of us, we are tough boys, but even though I had a hole in my chest, on the left-hand side, which was bleeding a lot, I wanted to try and race. I had a pretty good start and I told myself, just do your best, but then we had a red flag, because somebody else crashed. That made it difficult, because when I went back to the gate, the hole had opened again and there was a lot of blood, and I wasn’t feeling the best. We restarted and I had a small crash and I hit the injured area. Then I had to stop, it was just too much. I went to the hospital, and they put stitches in, so, yes, I was not good in the head, and it was a bit traumatic.

MXlarge: You were in Lommel, but you couldn’t race. Was the injury still not healed enough?

Adamo: Well, with 20 races in the calendar and Lommel coming just a few days after Loket, we didn’t have the time to recover. I would like to race every race, but I just didn’t have the time to recover from the injury in Loket.
