Australian SX - Townsville
Freestyle Motocross stars flew through the air, Supercross bikes lined the stadium forecourt and Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto swapped council attire for full Supercross gear as Queensland Country Bank Stadium played host to one of the most colourful and action-packed media launches the city has seen.
The launch marked the official arrival of AUSX Supercross and Freestyle Kings LIVE to Townsville, with riders, FMX athletes, stakeholders and media given a taste of what fans can expect when the event roars into Queensland Country Bank Stadium on October 3.
X Games Gold Medallist Rob Adelberg and Freestyle Kings LIVE athlete Brayden Davies brought the launch to life with FMX demonstrations outside the stadium, showcasing the huge tricks, backflips and entertainment that will feature as part of the event.
Joining the action were AUSX riders SX1/450ccNathan Crawford and reigning SX2/250cc Champion Ryder Kingsford, while North Queensland Cowboys representatives also got involved in the festivities as the city welcomed a major new sporting and entertainment event.
Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto embraced the occasion in full Supercross gear, joining riders and athletes as Queensland Country Bank Stadium prepares to host its first-ever major motorsport event.
The event is supported by Tourism and Events Queensland and Townsville Enterprise and is expected to attract thousands of fans to Townsville while showcasing the region nationally and internationally.
Townsville Enterprise CEO Claudia Brumme said the event would further strengthen Townsville's reputation as one of Australia's leading major event destinations.
"Townsville continues to cement itself as Australia's home of major events and sport. Events like AUSX Supercross bring incredible energy to the region while showcasing our city to audiences across Australia and around the world."
Mayor Nick Dametto said the event adds to a growing list of major events being attracted to the region.
"From PBR and Supercars to P!NK and now AUSX Supercross, Townsville continues to prove why we're the events capital of the North. Today gave everyone a glimpse of the excitement that's coming to Queensland Country Bank Stadium in October."
AUSX CEO Adam Bailey said bringing an event of this scale to Townsville had been years in the making.
"We've been working towards bringing AUSX to North Queensland for a long time and today is a really proud moment for everyone involved.
"Queensland Country Bank Stadium is one of Australia's great regional stadiums and to be able to bring Supercross and Freestyle Kings LIVE together here for the first time is incredibly exciting.
"We've seen what this championship can do in cities around Australia, and now Townsville gets to experience it. This is going to be one of the biggest events the city has seen."
AUSX rider Nathan Crawford said the opportunity to race in a venue of Queensland Country Bank Stadium's calibre was something riders looked forward to.
"As riders, these are the venues you want to race in. "To be competing in a stadium like this, in front of more than 20,000 fans, is pretty special.
"We've seen AUSX continue to grow, bringing Supercross to new cities and filling stadiums around the country, and now Townsville gets to be part of that. The atmosphere on October 3 is going to be incredible."
