Yamaha’s Jed Beaton has started his 2026 Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores (ProMX) campaign in sublime fashion, easily winning both premier class motos in Wonthaggi on March 21-22.

Under brilliant autumn sunshine at the regional Victorian track, Beaton’s clean sweep in Kawasaki MX1 was also matched by Honda’s Alex Larwood in Pirelli MX2 and American Lachlan Turner (Yamaha) in Ezilift MXW, while Hayden Draper (Yamaha) and Jack Deveson (Yamaha) shared victories in Maxxis MX3 to round out the ProMX Championship classes.

The two-day event also hosted Fox Racing MX85 action and the third instalment of the FIM Oceania Women’s Motocross Cup won in triumphant fashion by the United States of America ahead of Australia and New Zealand.

Round one of the ProMX Championship was supported by the Victorian Government via its Significant Sporting Events Program and the Bass Coast Shire Council.

Beaton, making his return to Kawasaki MX1 action after missing the last two rounds in 2025, was in the groove from the outset. The Queenslander’s crushing victories in the 25-minute plus a lap motos were by 49 and 25 seconds respectively as he made the perfect start to his quest to win a maiden MX1 title.

“Great day for me and the team,” he said. “Since coming back from my injury, there has been a lot of work put in, and it was nice to see it show up at round one. This track is a tough one, so if your fitness isn’t up to scratch or your bike isn’t good, it gets exposed. So, really happy with the work done and now we move onto round two and try and do it again.”

Beaton scored a maximum 50pts, while defending champion Kyle Webster (Honda, 3-2) – riding through gritted teeth after he hurt his right foot in a qualifying bingle – finished second overall on a countback from returning four-time MX1 champion Dean Ferris (Kawasaki, 2-3) after both finished on 42pts. Todd Waters (Husqvarna) and Aaron Tanti (Yamaha) are fourth and fifth in the championship on 34 and 32pts.

In the opening moto, Beaton was utterly dominant, especially after arch-rival Webster – who had pipped him in the earlier Superpole session – crashed again early on and had to fight his way back through the pack.

Webster passed Tanti on the second last lap to seize the final spot on the podium behind Ferris, while Waters was fifth from Luke Zielinski (Yamaha), Wilson Todd (Honda) and Liam Jackson (Honda).

The second moto saw Webster get the jump before Beaton again romped clear, with Ferris rounding off an impressive comeback in third from Waters, Zachary Watson (KTM), Todd, Tanti and Zielinski. Meanwhile, it was a tough day for Watson’s KTM teammate and reigning MX1 No. 2, Crawford, who was only 13th overall.
