Two men who have really given British motocross a shot in the arm during their prime are two members of the British team that won the 1994 Motocross des Nations. Kurt Nicoll and Rob Herring both had huge success at this event. Both will be racing this coming weekend at the WorldVetsMotocross, at the famous Farleigh Castle circuit, with the event running from the 18th, until the 20th of this week.

Not only did these two win in 1994 but also showed blistering speed on other occasions at the Motocross des Nations. For Nicoll, obviously 94 stands out, but he often rose to the occasion at the MXdN.

“Being part of Team GB to win the Motocross des Nations in 1994, it was an absolutely amazing experience, the whole thing. I had a hate/love relationship with the Motocross des Nations. Although the ’80s whenever I raced it, I never had any luck. I crashed and got concussion in Sweden; I crashed and broke my thumb in France. We went to Australia in ’92 I won the 500 class there and I won the 250 class in ’93 in Austria and then we won overall in ’94. They were absolutely some of the greatest races I can remember. Even ’97 – my last race as a professional – I won one of the heats in Nismes in Belgium.”

As for Herring, like Nicoll, 1994 was a highlight of his career, but he also battled the likes of Ron Lechien, Ricky Johnson, Jeff Ward and many other American legends at the MXdN.

“To race and win for your country, which is of course very special, winning the Motocross des Nations in 1994 was a highlight in my career, the MXdN in 88, especially the second moto, which was a stand-out. My first Grand Prix win in Yugoslavia in 1987. I had done one GP in 1986 and in 1987, nobody knew who I was. The 1990 des Nations at Vimmerby in Sweden, I also did well there, winning the second 125cc moto. I came from seventh or eight and won. I was also in the Motocross des Nations winning team, which was the highlight of my race career.”

Now, both will be back and riding alongside each other at the WorldVetsMotocross event next weekend and you just know the British public will come out in numbers to enjoy these two British legends.
