Cairoli Takes 90th GP Win

Posted on August 12, 2020

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Antonio Cairoli has won his 90th Grand Prix with victory at the MXGP of Riga with a 1-4 performance. Second place going to Jeremy Seewer with 4-2 and third Jeffrey Herlings with 3-3 results.

The Italian has also won a Grand Prix every single year since 2004 when he won his first. The Italian legend continues to amaze us and he is without question riding injured, but remains a serious contender in the 2020 championship.

“Feeling a little painful,” Cairoli said. “I was riding behind Arminas and I saw a yellow flag because of Jeffrey crashing and I crashed and hurt my knee again. It is a problem, but I am happy with the overall, thanks everybody. I am really happy of course. I want to dedicate this victory to my son and I hope he enjoyed the race. I am not 100%, struggling a lot with this problem. We try not to twist it again and hopefully for Sunday we feel better.”

“That was a rookie mistake," Herlings said. "I can't believe I did it. I washed the front wheel and fell. We did some good things for the championship, but we do lose five points with the crash. I improved my start in the second moto and I now regroup for Sunday and try and get one win before we go home.”

In the MXGP championship points it is Herlings 170 points, Gajser 142pts and Cairoli 129pts.

Cairoli again in the lead early in the second MXGP race. Second was Monticelli, then Evans, Herlings, Jasikonis, Seewer, Tonus, Desalle, Gajser, Vlaanderen in 10th. Cairoli looking like he just wants to get away from the pack as quickly as possible and is running hard. Herlings into third place, and then into second place and going after the leader.

Febvre in trouble and went down after colliding with Gajser, and lost some places, and Gajser drops to 10th place. Paulin 11th.  Jasikonis past Evans and after two laps it was Cairoli, Herlings, Jasikonis, Monticelli, Evans, Seewer, Desalle, Gajser, Tonus and Vlaanderen.

As Cairoli and Herlings lead, Jasikonis is all over them. Herlings takes the lead on lap three, and Jasikonis also passed the Italian with a stunning line. Evans remained fourth, then Monticelli. Coldenhoff down on the track and also in the positions. Prado into 11th place and Gajser now 8th.

Seewer on another charge as he moved into fourth place and relegated Evans to fifth place. After four laps it was Herlings, Jasikonis, Cairoli, Seewer, Evans, Desalle, Monticelli, Gajser, Paulin and Prado 10th.

Six laps in and Herlings lead was two seconds over Jasikonis, then Cairoli, Seewer, Desalle, Monticelli, Gajser, Evans, Paulin and Prado in 10th. Jasikonis closed a little on Herlings, with Cairoli also pushing to remain in contention for the GP victory.

Gajser into sixth place as he pushed Monticelli aside, and Herlings lead is now 1.6 over Jasikonis. Cairoli also losing sight of the front two. Coldenhoff out of the race with injured ribs, after his beautiful GP victory on Sunday is back to ground with a DNF in this race. Vlaanderen moved past Prado for 10th place.

After 10 laps it was Herlings with a two second lead over Jasikonis, then Cairoli, Seewer, Desalle, Gajser, Monticelli, Paulin, Tonus and Vlaanderen. Gajser moved into fifth place with a nice pass on Desalle, and Herlings lead is now 2.4 over Jasikonis, Cairoli a further three seconds back on the Lithuanian.

Not a lot happening up front as Herlings held 3.2 seconds over Jasikonis, and Cairoli nearly two seconds behind the second placed man. Seewer was closing on Cairoli for third, and Gajser sat back in fifth place.

Herlings went down as did Cairoli trying to miss Herlings and both lost a handful of places. Jasikonis in the lead, then Seewer, then Herlings and then Cairoli. The final lap Jasikonis has both Seewer and Herlings all over him. Crazy days in MXGP. Jasikonis win the moto, from Seewer and Herlings, with Cairoli fourth and taking the GP win.
