Canadian SXGP - Legends
When the FIM World Supercross Championship lands in Canada on October 26, for the opening round of the 2024 series, you just know the fans will come out in numbers as two of the greatest riders from the last decade and a half come out to play.
Multiple AMA champions, Eli Tomac and Ken Roczen will go into battle for this new looks WSX series and for the fans Worldwide, we need this series to work. Nothing against the greatest supercross series in the World, AMA supercross, but let’s not be greedy America and share you sport around a little.
It isn’t often an American build sport makes it Worldwide, Baseball, Nascar, Indycar, NFL and even to some extend, NBA just doesn’t cut it outside the shores of USA, but Supercross, well, it can do it with the right stadiums and the right racers and with Tomac and Roczen, it is on the way to something special in 2024.
“WSX and all of this is all part of a building process,” Tomac told Eric Johnson recently. “There are multiple reasons why I’m racing the WSX. The number one reason is that I’m getting back on the line and I’m getting back in the groove. There is nothing like replicating the race environment. That’s goal number one and reason number one. Number two is that it is going to be really cool for me to travel around the world. I’m going to see Australia, Canada and Abu Dhabi. I’m going to go check out the world. I know I only get so many opportunities to do things like this and I think it’s fitting for the amount of racing that I’ve done this year. In my opinion, this is all going to work out well for everyone involved.”
Ken Roczen is the defending champion and going for his third shot at a World supercross championship. A third title, along with his two AMA 450 motocross championship and that FIM MX2 championship places him right in the list of legends of the sport. The German will extend his career somewhat with World supercross, and for that, we should all be very happy.
“For supercross to grow as a sport around the world,” Roczen said. “I think it’s really important that more riders focus solely on the discipline, which is why I’m concentrating on the World Supercross Championship and the AMA Supercross Championship in the coming years. I feel like my riding this year has been as good as ever, and I’m excited to see what I can do when focusing on one speciality.
And in a recent announcement, the multiple AMA and World champions is excited to have Tomac involved, even if it might mean a tougher battle than the past two seasons.
“It’s no secret that I’ll be back for WSX in 2024, and I’m confident that this season will be the most competitive yet. We have new tracks and returning riders like Eli [Tomac], so the battle on track will be gnarly and the fans will be in for some amazing racing all season. Since the injury earlier in the year, I’ve been working hard to come back and even though I’m against setting high expectations, the ultimate goal is to always win the World Championship – I want to go three for three this season. I’m looking forward to the season ahead and to working with Colt and can’t wait to get it started.”
So, supercross fans in Canada and Worldwide, support this series as is crosses from Canada to Australia and Abu Dhabi, because if we want to get it back in Europe in the future, it needs to have bums on seats and the best riders competing.
