Coenen Conquers The Sand
Red plate owner, Lucas Coenen put together a very impressive 1-1 performance in Sardinia today, and with this type of form, its hard to see anyone beating him. The Belgian teenager has now won five of the last six Sunday races and he isn’t winning these races; he is annihilating the opposition. Even a crash in the late stages of the second moto couldn’t stop the run by Coenen.
HRC factory rider, Jeffrey Herlings went 2-2 for second overall and third overall was Nestaan Husqvarna factory rider, Kay De Wolf with 4-3 scores.
Lucas Coenen: I made a gap and relaxed and I was finding a better flow, but went on my ear. He came back, but I needed to win this to make a statement in the sand. Another double win. I was feeling good before the crash, but you forget to breath (after the crash), and I need to do that better next time. Overall, I love it.
Championship points are now Lucas Coenen 192 points, Jeffrey Herlings 178pts, Tom Vialle 162pts, Romain Febvre 160pts, Tim Gajser 149pts. So Coenen with a 14 point advantage over Herlings and 30 points ahead of Vialle.
MXGP Moto Two
Febvre with the lead in the second MXGP moto, with Vialle second, then Coenen, Oliver, Herlings, Forato, Fernandez, Bonacorsi, Gajser and Guadagnini. Coenen passed Vialle as did Herlings, putting the two-time MX2 champion back to fourth.
Herlings into second and pushing really hard to get around Febvre. If Herlings is ever going to stay with Coenen, it has to be now. Coenen getting away though, and Gajser all over Vialle and makes a pass to get into fourth.
The big guns at the front with the top ten Coenen, Herlings, Febvre, Gajser, Vialle, Oliver, Fernandez, Bonacorsi, Forato and Renaux 10th. De Wolf in 11th place and Adamo 14th. Welcome to the MXGP class boys.
Gajser into third place and the lead by Coenen over Herlings was 3.8 seconds, with Gajser 10.5 back. De Wolf into ninth spot. Gajser a mistake and a big crash. The Slovenian now back in 16th position and looking in pain as he continued to drop off the pace, finally in 20th spot, then 19th.
Coenen just cruising up front with a 4.5 second lead over Herlings and already looking like he took it down a notch and maintain that lead. Herlings 15 seconds ahead of Febvre, so the Dutchman flying, just not quick enough for the front man.
Lap six and the lead by Coenen was 6.2 seconds, with Herlings 21 seconds ahead of Febvre, then Vialle, Oliver, Fernandez, de Wolf, Forato, Renaux and Vlaanderen 10th. Gajser 17th. Vialle moved closer to Febvre, but the Kawasaki rider but the HRC man off in a corner.
Lap 10 and the lead by Coenen over Herlings was 7.3 seconds. The old Jeffrey Herlings usually started a charge with 10 minutes remaining and as that time clock arrived, Coenen made the gap eight seconds. Vialle into third place, but 41 seconds behind Coenen.
Coenen a crash and Herlings now just seconds off the leader and no doubt motivated to get the Belgian. Vialle also a crash and dropping down the field and into sixth place. Herlings clearly pushing really hard now, but Coenen still seems to have it under control.
Herlings suddenly all over the back wheel of Coenen and lapped riders not making it easy for the leader, however Coenen takes control again. Coenen wins the moto and the Grand Prix. Herlings second in the moto and overall and De Wolf third in the moto and third overall.
