Coenen Owns Lommel
In front of a huge Belgian crowd, who celebrated this win like it was a World championship victory, Red Bull KTM factory rider, Lucas Coenen has shown a lot in 2025, in his rookie MXGP season, but today in Lommel, he didn’t just show a lot, he showed us everything.
Racing in front of a huge home crowd, decked out in his specially designed FLY Racing gear and under huge pressure all week, from the Belgian media all wanting a piece of this talented kid, the 18-year-old Belgian swept to probably his most enjoyable Grand Prix victory, with a fight against his big rival, Romain Febvre, maybe the best battle of the season.
Coenen scored 2-1 results, with Febvre going 1-2 and while the red plate didn’t change hands, both riders showed us this World MXGP championship fight will probably go down to the wire in Darwin, Australia in a couple of months’ time.
Second overall was Febvre and third overall Calvin Vlaanderen with 3-5 results. Glenn Coldenhoff also did his World championship top three finish no harm with 5-4 scores.
Lucas Coenen: I am super pumped and it was just survival. I didn't expect to do this on the 450, it a lot tougher than on the 250. I am super pumped to win this in front of the home crowd and family.
Championship points are now Romain Febvre 734 points, Lucas Coenen 725pts, Glenn Coldenhoff 534pts, Ruben Fernandez 467pts, Calvin Vlaanderen 436pts
MXGP Moto Two
Herlings with the holeshot from Gifting, Febvre, Bonacorsi, Coenen, Vlaanderen, Fernandez, Coldenhoff, Renaux and Pancar in 10th. Coenen back to sixth place in a hectic opening lap. Herlings a 2.4 second lead very quickly.
On lap one the lead was 3.6 seconds and Herlings showing Herlings speed. Coenen up to fifth again, and Febvre some two seconds over Bonacorsi. Coenen fourth as he passed Vlaanderen, before the Dutchman repassed, but Coenen eventually got him for good. Coenen all over Bonacorsi and showing a lot of momentum.
Lead by Herlings on lap two was 6.4 seconds and Coenen looking very aggressive to get to third spot. Herlings really flying as the lead went to eight seconds at the start of lap three. Coenen into third place and three seconds down on Febvre.
Coenen slowly getting closer and closer to Febvre in second, with Bonacorsi 18 seconds off the leader, then came Vlaanderen, Fernandez, Coldenhoff, Renaux, Pancar and Van De Moosdijk. Lap four the lead was 9.4 seconds with Herlings still showing blistering speed.
Vlaanderen a mistake and was passed by Fernandez and Coldenhoff. Febvre starting to catch Herlings on lap five with the lead down to 6.7 seconds and Coenen also catching Febvre. Bonacorsi now 24 seconds behind, Fernandez 28 seconds behind and Coldenhoff 31 seconds behind.
Herlings responded to open the gap slightly, but then had a big crash and lost not only first place, but also second place. On lap six I was Febvre, Coenen, Herlings, Bonacorsi, Fernandez, Coldenhoff, Vlaanderen, Renaux, Pancar and Fredriksen. Coenen moving closer to Febvre as the crowd came alive again.
Moto one replay as Febvre leads and Coenen hangs onto him. The gap between the two front men was 1.5 seconds and maybe the younger rider can find more energy as the race enters the closing stages. This has been a brilliant Grand Prix with these two riders fighting for major points and the red plate.
Febvre knows he has to make Coenen work for the pass and like moto one, he is controlling the race at the front. Brilliant stuff, really amazing to watch. Coenen into the lead, right in front of the large spectator area and this is memories of the great era of Stefan Everts and Joel Smets. Coenen showing so much today.
On lap 12 it was Coenen with a 6.5 second lead, and Herlings 25 seconds back in third place, then came Bonacorsi, Coldenhoff, Vlaanderen, Pancar, Fredriksen, Renaux and Watson in a fighting 10th place. Coenen wins it from Febvre and Bonacorsi after Herlings crashed out again.
