Coenen Wins Saturday - Finland
Lucas Coenen of the Redbull KTM factory team has won the MXGP qualifier with a flag to flag victory. The Belgian teenager looked brilliant around this sand circuit and with Romain Febvre crashing early and fighting back to sixth spot, the youngster gained more points on the Frenchman in the championship chase.
Lucas Coenen: I was feeling good. I got a bit hot, but a good moto. Took the holeshot and a good day. Tomorrow we have two motos and we try and get on the grind. I don't like to change the bike, but we had high speed in practice and I didn't find a flow. Tomorrow, we want to get in front and just play.
MXGP Qualifier
Coenen holeshot the MXGP qualifier from Bonacorsi, Sterry, Fernandez, Vlaanderen, Geerts, Febvre, Coldenhoff, Bogers, Seewer in 10th. Febvre a mistake as he went down with Coldenhoff and 19th and 20th now. Febvre quickly into 17th place and on lap two was already in 13th spot.
Coenen with a two second lead over Bonacorsi, with Fernandez 4.4 seconds back and Vlaanderen moved past Sterry, who dropped to fifth place, ahead of Geerts, Bogers, Watson, Seewer and Horgmo. Fernandez a mistake and dropped behind Sterry, but quickly made his way past.
Lap five and the lead by Coenen was six seconds over Vlaanderen, who had passed Bonacorsi, with Fernandez fourth, then Sterry, Geerts, Bogers, Watson, Seewer and Van Doninck. Febvre now 11th. Coldenhoff back in 16th place after his crash with Febvre. Watson a nice pass on Bogers as he moved into seventh and Febvre passed Seewer to get into the top ten.
Eight laps down the lead by Coenen over Vlaanderen was 5.3 seconds with Bonacorsi 12 seconds back in third place. Febvre charging as he moved into seventh place and gained at last a handful of points. Coldenhoff up to 14th position. Sterry still riding well in fifth position, but Geerts still on his back wheel.
Geerts finally moved past Sterry for fifth position and the top ten on lap 10 was Coenen, Vlaanderen, Bonacorsi, Fernandez, Geerts, Sterry, Febvre, Van Doninck, Watson and Seewer. Two Brit in the top ten, it has been a while since we could say that. Febvre onto the back wheel of Sterry and maybe looking to get to the Brit and also Geerts? Febvre moved past Sterry and Coenen wins the race from Vlaanderen and Bonacorsi.
