Coldenhoff Wins Moto One
Glenn Coldenhoff of the Fantic factory team has won the opening MXGP moto at the Grand Prix of Great Britain, becoming the first rider to win in MXGP on a Fantic machine. The Dutchman started fast and after passing Lucas Coenen early, just controlled the moto. Second was Coenen and third Romain Febvre.
Glenn Coldenhoff: It is amazing and first win for Fantic and for me my first moto win in a while. I felt good, pulled a good start and then I passed Lucas and I don't know what happened to Jeffrey. Now onto the second moto.
Championship points are now Romain Febvre 559 points, Lucas Coenen 532, Glenn Coldenhoff 395pts, Ruben Fernandez 361pts, and Maxime Renaux 347pts. The points gap between Febvre and Coenen now 27 points.
MXGP Moto One
With overcast skies and in front of a large British crowd, Coenen took the holeshot, with Coldehoff second, then Fernandez, Herlings, Cairoli, Febvre, Gifting, Vlaanderen, Forato and Bogers 10th. Febvre all over Cairoli, as Coenen gets well away from everyone. Febvre passed Cairoli and went after Herlings. Gifting moved past Cairoli as the veterans probably starting to wonder what he is doing around the front of the pack at nearly 40 years of age.
Lap two and it was Coenen with a 2.4 second lead over Coldenhoff, then Fernandez 4.8 back, Herlings seven seconds off the leader, then Febvre, Gifting, Cairoli, Vlaanderen, Bogers and Forato.
Coldenhoff into the lead as he passed a fallen Coenen and the lead by the Dutchman was 1.3 seconds. Herlings starting to warm up as he was just 5.7 behind his countryman. A difficult track to make up time it seems. Seewer slipped over and dropped back to 15th, after holding 11th spot.
As was the case in the MX2 moto, not a lot of positional changes in this part of the MXGP moto, and Coldenhoff extended his lead to two seconds over Coenen, with Fernandez close to the Belgian, with Herlings 5.6 back and Febvre 6.9 further behind.
The race warming up a little as Vlaanderen moved past Cairoli, to put him in eight place and up front, the top four making some changes. Herlings all over Fernande for third and he made the pass. Just 4.6 behind Coldenhoff on lap six. Lap six it was Coldenhoff, Coenen, Herlings, Fernandez, Febvre, Gifting, Vlaanderen, Cairoli, Bogers and Forato.
Geerts crashed out of the moto and Herlings now 2.1 behind Coldenhoff and all over the back wheel of Coenen. On lap eight it was Coldenhoff, Coenen, Herlings, Fernandez, Febvre, Gifting, Vlaanderen, Cairoli, Bogers and Forato. Just a little over 10 minutes remaining and that means Herlings go time.
Herlings into second as he made a beautiful pass on Coenen and the gap to Coldenhoff was 2.4 seconds. Herlings all over Coldenhoff and the obvious will happen any time now. Febvre moved into fourth and chasing Coenen. Cairoli into seventh place with a pass on Gifting.
Coenen catching Herlings and Coldenhoff getting away from his countryman, so who knows what would happen with the top three. Herlings again all over Coldenhoff for the lead. Febvre well back in fourth and not challenging the top three.
Herlings crashed out and allowed Coenen and Fevbre to pass and drop to fourth position. That pass by Febvre seems to have given the Frenchman some speed as he starts to catch Coenen. Coldenhoff wins it from Coenen and Febvre. Coenen finding some speed as he closed right up on Coldenhoff.
