Cooper Webb in OZ
American superstar Cooper Webb will make his first World Supercross Championship appearance on the Gold Coast this weekend against a stacked international field and rekindle his rivalry with Eli Tomac in a fresh twist of team allegiances.
Two-time AMA Supercross champion Cooper Webb will make his much-anticipated World Supercross Championship debut on the Gold Coast this weekend.
The American arrives both excited and curious to see how he’ll stack up against an elite international field in unfamiliar territory.
The Gold Coast marks only his second race aboard his new Yamaha, a machine he believes has major potential, even if the learning curve remains steep.
“So far it’s been awesome,” Webb said of his World Supercross experience. It’s my first time doing the World Supercross, and I’m loving every bit of it. We get to travel here to Australia, the Gold Coast. I get to be at the beach while we race my dirt bike in front of the best racers in the world.
“We have the brand-new 2026 YZ450 Yamaha, which has been a great new platform, but it has its challenges. We had a great week tweaking and tuning, and I know I’ve made some improvements. Racing it here against some of the best riders in the world will be the ultimate test.”
World Supercross will also deliver a surreal twist for Webb as he lines up next to long-time rival Eli Tomac, only this time with their manufacturer alliances swapped.
“It’s going to be crazy seeing Eli on a KTM, I’m not going to lie,” Webb said.
“I spent a lot of my career and had a lot of success on the KTM, and we were always battling each other. Then the last few years we were teammates on a Yamaha. Now he’s on my old team while I’m on his, it’s kind of a whole mashup.”
With the biggest names in supercross assembled and a near sell-out crowd expected, Webb knows that a debut win on the Gold Coast would send a message that travels far beyond World Supercross.
“It’d be huge to get a win here. I’m racing some of the best in this generation – including myself – and coming off a championship in the U.S., I don’t hold that lightly,” he added.
“I want to come out here and show why I am the domestic champion. It’s a new format for me, my first ever World Supercross, and these guys know how this series works. I’m going to learn, but I’m going to go out there and go for the win.”
After missing the opening rounds, Webb knows he has his work cut out. With a new bike beneath him, a stacked field around him, and momentum from his U.S. championship campaign, the American is aiming to use Round Three as the launchpad for a return to the top.
