The FIM World Supercross Championship has announced the appointment of former international motocross racer and seasoned motorsport executive Thomas Covington as its new Director of Racing.
Covington’s appointment follows the decision by Kurt Nicoll to step down from his role as Vice President of Race Development at the conclusion of the 2025 season, marking the end of an influential tenure that has been instrumental in shaping the championship’s global expansion and commitment to competitive excellence.
Nicoll will remain actively involved in the 2025 FIM World Supercross season, which commences in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 8 November, to ensure a smooth handover and transition to Covington, who will assume his role immediately.
Tom Burwell, CEO of World Supercross, said: “Kurt has been instrumental in developing the racing framework and operational excellence of World Supercross. His contributions have set the foundation for the future of the championship, and we’re deeply grateful for his leadership, insight, and commitment. We wish him all the best in his next chapter.”
Kurt Nicoll, said: “It’s been incredibly rewarding to help build World Supercross’ global growth and elite racing. Working alongside such a passionate and talented team has been a privilege, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together. The championship is in such a strong position for the future, and I’m confident that Thomas’s experience and energy will help take World Supercross to even greater heights.”
Stepping into the role is Covington, who brings a wealth of experience both on and off the track. Covington began racing motocross at just four years old and went on to win his first AMA Amateur National Championship at Loretta Lynn’s in 2003, followed by additional titles in 2008 and 2010.
His professional career took him to the MXGP World Championship, where he raced for factory Kawasaki and Husqvarna teams, claiming four Grand Prix victories – two in Mexico, one in France, and one in Turkey – and representing Team USA at the 2017 Motocross of Nations.
Following his professional racing career, Covington transitioned into motorsport management, leading the P1 Offshore division for Powerboat P1, where he oversaw international powerboat and jet ski racing events. His combined experience as a professional racer and event promoter, puts him a unique position to advance World Supercross’ mission of delivering world-class competition and fan experiences globally.
Thomas Covington said: “It’s an incredible honour to join World Supercross in this capacity at a very exciting time for the championship. Having been on both sides of motorsport – as a racer and an organiser – I understand what it takes to create an environment where athletes can perform at their best and fans can experience the sport at its most thrilling. I’m excited to build on the foundation Kurt has established and help take World Supercross to the next level across the globe.”
“Thomas brings a modern, athlete-driven perspective to our race development strategy,” added Tom Burwell. “His international experience and proven leadership in motorsport promotion make him an ideal fit to guide World Supercross into its next era.”
