De Wolf - Still In The Fight

World MX2 champion, Kay de Wolf heads into this weekend’s Latvian Grand Prix as a bit of a question mark. The defending MX2 World champion is suffering an ankle injury and is fighting hard to stay in the points and despite losing the red plate in France a couple of weeks ago, must still feel confident he can return to his best form soon.

With nine Grand Prix wins to his name, the Dutchman is very much the most successful rider in the MX2 class, and you could also say the most talented. Since winning the opening Grand Prix in Argentina and showing that number one on his bike doesn’t give him any pressure, it has been a little up and down for de Wolf.

He has had moments where he has staggered, but then again, he also had that in 2024, so this has nothing to do with pressure, but maybe just a lack of experience. It is easy to forget, he is only 20 years of age and debuted in the MX2 class in 2021 in Russia. There is still a lot to learn for any rider with that amount of experience.

The last three GPs have been very up and down, but mainly due to his injury in France, outside of that a win in Spain and a third place in Germany really put him in a good place entering Latvia, where he has done well in the last, including a win in 2023. On his fist visit to Latvia in 2021, he finished in ninth place overall, then finished fourth overall in 2022, and won in 2023 and fourth again in 2024.

What motocross riders put their bodies through, most normal people can not understand and while De Wolf continues to try and get his body right, his mind is probably staying strong and reminding himself, he is the defending champion for a reason. Do not be surprised if he reduces the points lead of Andrea Adamo in Latvia this weekend. It is currently, 466 points to Adamo and 435pts for de Wolf.

Spain GP – 1-4 Winner

"The first moto was pretty easy – I got into second position early on in the race. I waited a bit before I passed Thibault, and then I led the rest of the race. Liam was pushing me towards the end – he did a great job there. In the second moto, I don’t really know what happened at the start; I just banged bars with other riders at the start, and that basically dropped me to last. I just tried to work my way up and kept pushing to the end – and it paid off! In the last three laps I made four more passes, so that was a crazy second moto! I want to thank the team and everybody around me – my girlfriend, my family, everybody supporting me at home – I really appreciate it!”

France GP – 14-9 13th Overall

“This weekend was a rough one. I picked up an ankle injury in timed practice, and from there it felt like things just didn’t go our way. The conditions on Sunday were really tricky with the rain overnight, and I had a couple of crashes in the first race that set me back. In the second moto, I got caught up in a first-lap incident which made it another tough fight from the back. I did what I could and kept pushing, but obviously losing the red plate is frustrating. Still, we’re not giving up - I’ll rest up this week, reset, and come back ready to fight for the podium in Germany.”

Germany GP – 7-2 3rd Overall

“Honestly, it was a really tough weekend. I took a hard hit earlier in the event which made things more difficult, but I just kept digging deep and didn’t give up. Saturday wasn’t ideal, and I had to work hard in the first moto to come through the pack. Then the rain before the second race completely changed the track - it was like riding a totally different circuit. But I managed a strong start and rode smart in the mud to bring it home in second, which gave me the podium overall. I’m proud of the effort and happy with the result. Big thanks to the team for sticking behind me - now I’m looking forward to building on this next weekend.”
