De Wolf Wins Moto One
Nestaan Husqvarna factory rider, Kay De Wolf extended his MX2 championship points lead as he won the opening MX2 moto this afternoon in Lommel. The Dutchman led took the lead early, then crashed and lost the lead, before regaining it again and pulled a large gap to second placed Ferruccio Zanchi, who was one of the few riders to keep the bike on two wheels (but crashed in the final laps). Zanchi would lose second late in the race as Elzinga made the pass to make it a Dutch 1-2, with South African McLellan third.
Kay De Wolf: I got good news from the pit lane that Lucas went down, but I didn't make it easy, this track is so brutal and I made a small mistake and tipped over, but I am happy. I go recover now and get ready for the second one.
It was a bit of a demolition derby at some points as all the contenders, de Wolf, both Coenen brothers, Simon Langenfelder and Liam Everts dropped their bikes. A real rollercoaster race, but exciting to watch early. Late in the race, it was just a de Wolf lesson on how to race in the deep sand.
World championship points are now Kay de Wolf 661 points, Lucas Coenen 605pts, Simon Laengenfelder 581pts, Liam Everts 536pts and Andrea Adamo 457pts.

Lap one and it was Sasha Coenen, de Wolf, Lucas Coenen, Zanchi, Elzinga, Everts (who respassed McLellan), McLellan, Reisulis, Langenfelder and Walvoort. De Wolf into the lead as Lucas Coenen dropped to ninth place and losing serious points on the red plate owner so far. Haarup into 10th as he passed Walvoort.
Elzinga and Everts in a great battle as they swap positions, Everts finally having the upper hand and moving into fourth place. On lap three the lead by De Wolf was 2.8 over Sasha Coenen, with Zanchie 8.2 seconds back in third. Everts closing in on Zanchi.
After five laps it was De Wolf with a 5.5 second lead, then Sasha Coenen, Zanchi, Everts, Elzinga, McLellan, Coenen, Langenfelder, Reisulis and Haarup 10th. De Wolf a mistake, crashed and lost the lead to Sasha Coenen, who now had a 1.6 second lead. Zanchi was 3.8 behind the leader and Liam Everts a further three seconds back, but de Wolf quickly closed the gap back to Sasha Coenen.
Everts moved into third and currently Belgian riders first and third and the crowd getting pretty excited, but then Sasha Coenen crashed and handed the lead back to the Dutchie. Everts also a mistake and the top ten was suddenly, de Wolf with a four second lead over Zanchi, then Elzinga, Lucas Coenen, McLellan, Sasha Coenen, Everts, Langenfelder, Haarup and Resulis.
Lap seven and it was De Wolf, Zanchi, Lucas Coenen, Elzinga, McLellan, Everts, Langenfelder, Haarup, Sasha Coenen, Resulis and Walvoort, but then Lucas Coenen crashed again and dropped back to ninth. What a crazy race.
Nice battle forming as Elzinga, Everts and McLellan fight for third place and Everts looking strong, but so many mistakes by so many riders. Everts passed McLellan and right onto Elzinga. Nine laps in and it was De Wolf with a six second lead over Zanchi, and one of the few riders who hasn’t crashed yet, then Elzinga, Everts, McLellan, Langenfelder.
Haarup on a roll as he passed McLellan, and into fifth place and the lead by De Wolf over Zanchi was now seven seconds, Everts in fourth was three seconds off the pace of third placed man. Lap 11 it was De Wolf with an eight second lead over Zanchi, then Elzinga, Everts, Haarup, McLellan, Lucas Coenen, Langenfelder, Reisulis, and Sasha Coenen 10th.
Lap 14 and it was De Wolf, Zanchi, Elzinga, McLellan, Haarup, Lucas Coenen, Everts, Langenfelder, Reisulis and Sasha Coenen. Everts crashing for maybe the fourth time in the moto. De Wolf wins it from fellow Dutchman Elzinga and McLellan third after Zanchi did crash in the moto.
