Denver SX - History

  • News

The history of Supercross in Denver is a tale of two eras, beginning with a brief debut in the 1990s followed by a modern resurgence at the home of the Denver Broncos. Because of its high elevation (5,280 feet), the race is famously known as the Mile High City round.

The Early Era: Old Mile High Stadium

Supercross first visited Denver for a single event in 1996 at the original Mile High Stadium.

The Race: It served as the season finale. Jeremy McGrath capped off his dominant 1996 season with his 14th victory of the year.

The Track: It featured one of the shortest starts in Supercross history because the venue owners required the track to stay off the primary playing field.

250 Class: A young Kevin Windham won the 125SX (now 250SX) Western Regional finale after already clinching the championship.

The Modern Era: Empower Field at Mile High

After a 23-year absence, Supercross returned to Denver in 2019 at the new Empower Field at Mile High. Since then, it has become a staple late-season round.

Winners 450 and 250 and Highlights

2019 - Eli Tomac - Adam Cianciarulo - Tomac wins in front of his home-state Colorado fans.

2022 - Jason Anderson - Hunter Lawrence - Eli Tomac finishes 5th to clinch the 450SX title

2023 - Chase Sexton - RJ Hampshire - Championship leader Eli Tomac suffers a season-ending Achilles injury, shifting the title to Sexton. Jett Lawrence clinches his 250 West title here.

2024 - Jett Lawrence - Jo Shimoda - Jett and Hunter Lawrence make history as the first brothers to finish 1-2 in the premier class.

2025 - Chase Sexton - Haiden Deegan - Haiden Deegan wins the race to clinch his first career 250SX West Championship.

Historical Significance

Denver is often the penultimate round of the season, making it a "clinch site" where titles are frequently decided. As of 2026, no rider has won more than once in the 450SX class at this venue, highlighting the fierce competition the high altitude and hard-packed dirt provide.
