Febvre Perfect in Sweden
2015 world MXGP champion, Romain Febvre made huge steps to becoming a two time world motocross champion with a brilliant performance in Sweden today, going 1-1-1 over the weekend.
The Kawasaki factory rider put together a perfect day and now holds more than 40 points on second placed man, Lucas Coenen, who struggled all weekend long with very disappointing 7-12 scores and eighth overall.
Romain Febvre: First time this year going 1-1-1 and for so many GPs I was looking for this. Everything clicked, two holeshots. Obviously I saw Gifting was going for it and riding good. Really pushing, maybe too much. For me, a really good weekend. I won't lie, it is really a good weekend for the championship. It isn't done until the last round and going 1-1-1 is awesome. I will fight until the end. 10 years ago I won here. It feels good and I don't count, I don't care, I just try my best every time.
Jeffrey Herlings: Three second place finishes, and that last moto, I was pushing him (Febvre) and I was running out of tear-offs and then he stalled his bike. In those last three laps with Gifting, I thought where did he come from. Looking forward to my home GP in Arnhem.
Calvin Vlaanderen: It was such a good weekend to go back to back podiums. This podium feeling never gets old. That second race was a dogfight and I loved it. Maxime races hard, but clean and Isak was riding well, but did hold us up a bit. I am having so much fun and home GP next. I saw him (Gifting) take the lead, and it would have been cool for him to win, but he goes all out all the time.
Lucas Coenen: I had a good jump but got closed down and I was far I the back and didn’t want to risk. With 20 minutes to go, my right arm was sore, and I didn’t have much control and then arm-pump came in and it was really tough. A tough weekend already. Yesterday in the qualification the sun was a problem, but the start is key and if you don’t get the start, your race is done.
Championship points are now Romain Febvre 794 points, Lucas Coenen 753pts, Glenn Coldenhoff 572pts, Ruben Fernandez 502pts, and Calvin Vlaanderen 480pts. A 41 point lead by Febvre over Coenen with four GPs remaining.
MXGP Moto Two
Febvre with the holeshot, followed by Gifting and Herlings, then came Gajser with Coenen a crash in turn three and last. A world championship for Belgium not looking good after this Swedish round. Gajser moved past Gifting and the two nearly collided again. Next came Renaux, Vlaanderen, Coldenhoff, Fernandez, Jonass, Pancar. Coenen 27th.
Febvre a two second lead, but you get the feeling maybe Herlings is looking for the overall and Gajser and Gifting still fighting for points. Top ten on lap five was Febvre, Herlings, Gajser, Gifting, Renaux, Vlaanderen, Coldenhoff, Fernandez, Pancar and Jonass 10th. Coenen in 21st place.
The gap between Febvre and Herlings remained around two seconds, with Gajser three seconds back, then Gifting, Renaux, Vlaanderen, Coldenhoff, Fernandez, Pancar, and Van DOninck 10th. Coenen 17th and really struggling.
Herlings suddenly all over the Frenchman and looking like he wants to head to Arnhem with a GP win under his belt. Vlaanderen and Renaux battle to both pass Gifting for fourth place and Jonass and Seewer both pushing hard in 11th and 12th. Vlaanderen moved past Renaux and Renaux takes him back.
Vlaanderen back into fifth place as Gifting gets more pressure from the South African/Dutchman. Renaux back past Vlaanderen with a nice little pass. Top ten on lap 11 was Febvre, Herlings, Gajser, Gifting, Renaux, Vlaanderen, Coldenhoff, Fernandez, Pancar and Van Doninck.
Gajser dropped to seventh with a mistake and the top ten went Febvre, Herlings, Gifting, Renaux, Vlaanderen, Coldenhoff, Gajser, Fernandez, Pancar and Van Doninck. Coenen up to 13th place.
Suddenly ridiculous action as Herlings, Gifting, Renaux and Vlaanderen all up on Febvre. Gifting moved into second as he passed Herlings and now going after Febvre. Three laps remaining and this race and GP is anyone’s. Two laps to go and Febvre looking strong in first spot and set to go 1-1-1 for the weekend.
Gifting into the lead and the crowd going nuts. High drama as Gifting went down and handed Febvre a 1-1-1 weekend and Herlings second place. Third was Renaux and then came Vlaanderen and Coldenhoff.
