Gajser and Prado - Moving Up

Posted on April 08, 2019

With victory yesterday, Tim Gajser has moved a step closer to the top three in the current GP winners list and Jorge Prado, who also won in Italy on the weekend, is now just a handful of GP wins away from Clement Desalle, who holds third place in the GP winners list of current riders.

Of course, at the very top are two legends in Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings with 88 and 84 GP wins apiece. What is really exciting about the 2019 season is the fact Cairoli with another 13 GP wins could move past Stefan Everts as the greatest GP winner of all time and of course with those GP wins would come World title number 10. Lets not get ahead of ourselves though, because after yesterday this MXGP championship is long but over.

Of course after last seasons 17 GP wins, we all awaited Herlings to pass Everts first, and nothing is impossible as the Dutchman will be back at the next GP, and while he might not be in a position to win straight away, there is no doubt he will start winning again. The question is, how many can he get in 2019 and how many Cairoli can get?

Prado is just two GP wins away from entering the 25 greatest GP winners of all time, with Hakan Carlqvist and Sebastien Tortelli sharing that 25th place with 20 GP wins each. Wonder how long it will take for Gajser to also join that top 25 all-time list? Sitting in a pretty good era aren’t we. Little like the tennis with Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, who have been breaking record after record in the last 20 years.

MXGP with its present or former World champions in Cairoli, Herlings, Febvre, Gajser, Jonass and Tixier is a very tough proposition at the moment. Ray Archer image
