Gajser Great in Lommel

Posted on October 18, 2020

HRC rider Tim Gajser has put together a 2-1 performance to pick up his 26th Grand Prix victory and made a big step to his fourth World motocross championship. His points lead over second place man Antonio Cairoli is now 48 points.

The Slovenian was mister consistent as riders dropped like flies around the rough and tumble of Lommel. Second overall was Gautier Paulin with 1-5 scores and third Jorge Prado with 3-4 results.

“I mean, it is unbelievable,” Gajser said. “I am so happy and we were training so hard and testing a lot in the sand and we see all the hard work in the winter has paid off. Riding I the sand in Lommel I was really enjoying it. First moto a good start and then I made a stupid crash and Gautier got me, and the second moto I tried to pass Prado and made a comfortable lead and won.”

The championship points are now Gajser with a48 points lead on 488 points, then Cairoli 440 pts, Prado 429 pts and also Seewer 429 pts.

Prado led the second MXGP moto from Gajser, Seewer, Bogers, Tonus, Walsh, Paulin, Febvre, Cairoli and Bobryshev. Van Horebeek made a mistake in the first corner and was down in last position. Prado wasn’t mucking around and was already trying to break away from Gajser, but the HRC man wasn’t having any of it.

The MXGP champion and the MX2 champion were going at it, swapping the lead and the Spaniard lost out to the older, more experienced Gajser, who took the lead and quickly pulled away. The defending champion wasn’t letting the new kid get the better of him. Cairoli up to seventh place, but a long way back from the youngsters up front.

After two laps it was Gajser with a two second lead, then Prado, Seewer, Bogers, Febvre, Paulin, Cairoli, Tonus, Bobryshev and Tixier 10th. Vlaanderen into 12th and Walsh drops to 13th. Cairoli closing up on Paulin for sixth position.

Gajser had extended his lead to 3.7 seconds over Prado on lap five, and then came, Seewer, Bogers, Febvre, Paulin, Cairoli, Tonus, Tixier, and Van Doninck in 10th. On lap seven the lead was nearly six seconds and the two veterans Paulin and Cairoli battled for sixth spot.

Bogers lost some places as Febvre, Paulin and Cairoli made their way past, placing the Dutchman in seventh position. The top ten on lap 10 was Gajser, Prado, Seewer, Febvre, Paulin, Cairoli, Bogers, Tixier, Van Doninck, and Vlaanderen. Suddenly Tixier dropped to 10th as Van Doninck and Vlaanderen went past.

Prado and Seewer collided and the Spanish rider went down, losing two spots as he got up in fourth place. After 12 laps it was Gajser with a 10 second lead over Seewer, then Febvre, Prado, Paulin, Cairoli, Bogers, Van Doninck, Vlaanderen and Tixier.

Seewer a mistake and he dropped from second to third as the Frenchman moved into the runner-up place. Gajser winning the race from Febvre and Seewer.
