Gajser wins Super-Final

Posted on January 26, 2020

Tim Gajser made his weekend in Italy a good one winning the MXGP race and also the super-final. The World champion led most of the laps for the Sunday and his 1-1 scores makes him a strong contender to win the International Italia series going into the second round next weekend. Second in the super-final was Jeremy Seewer and third was Arminas Jasikonis.

Gajser: It was a good day and I am so happy to start the season after a long break. I had a good start and I made a big lead, but we had to pass the lapped riders and they were way slower than us and one touched my front wheel and I had a crash. I could pick the bike up, but then Jeremy was just behind me and I could stay in front. Also the sun was getting lower and lower and you couldn't see the lines, but it was the same for everyone.

Seewer: It was getting close because Tim made a mistake, I think he crashed with a lapped rider. It is hard to start behind the 250 rider and some big crashes in the first lap, but I could avoid it, and we had a good start and know what we have to work on.

Jasikonis: First moto we didn’t have a great start and had to work my way through. I got some arm pump and in the second moto the first lap was terrible with so many crashes. I rode over Mitch’s bike and then we started working and I finished third and I was happy from where I started.

HRC dominated the first corner with Gajser in the lead of the super-final, then came Evans, although the Aussie went down hard in the first corner and was run over by a bunch of riders. Gajser was long gone on the opening laps, maybe three seconds ahead of the field after half a lap.

Actually, more like five seconds after a lap and second placed rider Seewer was ahead of Geerts, Watson and Jonass. Paulin was 10th, Jasikonis 15th. Monticelli was in for repairs and Desalle was struggling as his bike seemed to have stopped. Paulin moved up to seventh place.

A very lonely race for Gajser, miles ahead of everyone and clearly in control, and Jonass was starting to put pressure on Geerts, with Watson behind them. Jonass eventually got past Geerts for third place as the two MX2 Kemea riders continued to fun top five.

Jasikonis was on fire as he passed Watson and went after Geerts and his Husky team-mate and Desalle and Evans were both out of the race. Geerts got back around Jonass, and Jasikonis also passed Jonass.

Paulin moved into fifth place and Watson was back in seventh as he lost the group up front. Jasikonis moved into third place in passing Geerts and Febvre was way back in 16th place. A bad day for Kawasaki.

Top riders were Gajser, Seewer, Jasikonis, Geerts, Paulin, Watson, Jonass, Cervellin and Bogers. The lead by Gajser was 10 seconds over Seewer with Jasikonis a further 14 seconds back.

Paulin moved into fourth place passing Geerts and Watson was back in sixth place, with Jonass seventh. Suddenly Seewer was on the back wheel of Gajser, who must have made a mistake, although Gajser quickly got away again as he was pushing hard.

It was Gajser, Seewer, Jasikonis, Paulin, Geerts, Watson, Cervellin, Bogers, Lesiardo, and Renaux. Jonass was gone and Febvre was up to 13th place.

While it seemed Gajser had it all in control, in the background Seewer was still pushing hard and trying to get closer to the leader. Two laps to go in the race and Gajser still had to keep his composure and remain pushing, because Seewer was riding hard and closing. Gajser won it from Seewer and Jasikonis.
