Geerts Wins Saturday - Lugo
Monster Energy Yamaha rider, Jago Geerts has won the MXGP qualifier after a drama filled race, where both Romain Febvre and Lucas Coenen crashed, Febvre while holding the lead and Coenen as he tried to pass Geerts for the lead.
Jago Geerts: It was crazy, I finally got a good start, took the holeshot and I was leading lap after lap and Febvre was pushing me and then he had a small crash and I got the win. I knew it was coming, but nice to get a win again.
Championship points are now Romain Febvre 339 points, Tim Gajser 305pts, Lucas Coenen 294pts, Glenn Coldenhoff 252pts, and Maxime Renaux 225pts
MXGP Qualification Race
Geerts led the MXGP qualifier from Febvre, Seewer, Coenen, Jonass, Renaux, Pancar, Herlings, Koch, Vlaanderen in 10th. A big crash on turn two with Fernandez, Bonacorsi, Guadagnini, all three down and at the back of the field. Coenen into third as he passed Seewer and Renaux did the same thing.
Herlings dropped to eight as Koch made a pass on the Dutchman and Coldenhoff into 10th as Koch dropped to 11th. On lap two the top ten was Geerts, Febvre, Coenen, Renaux, Seewer, Jonass, Pancar, Vlaanderen, Herlings and Coldenhoff.
Febvre all over Geerts for the lead as Coenen was 3.4 seconds back in third place and Herlings moved past Pancar for eight place. Top ten on lap four was Geerts, Febvre, Coenen, Renaux, Seewer, Vlaanderen, Jonass, Herlings, Coldenhoff and Pancar.
Great battle for the lead between Geerts and Febvre as they get a little further away from Coenen in third on lap five. Renaux was 7.6 seconds back in fourth, and a second gap kept Seewer, Vlaanderen, Jonass, Herlings and Coldenhoff just off each other’s pace.
Coenen closing a little on the two front men and clearly making ground as he clocked the quickest lap of the moto on lap seven and was suddenly just 2.8 seconds back. Coenen again cut the lead and there is no doubt, he is again doing a bit of a Herlings on the front men.
Around three laps remaining as the lead by 1.1 for Geerts, but Coenen was now 2.3 seconds back. Renaux in fourth was 10 seconds off the pace, but no passing back in the field from fifth to 10th. Coenen seemingly not continuing his charge as he lost some ground on the front two.
Febvre into the lead on lap 10, but Geerts not giving up as he tries to regain the top spot. Coenen now four seconds back and this is probably how it will end. Febvre though had other ideas as he crashed in a corner and handed Geerts the lead back, but Coenen was suddenly all over the leader. Coenen then crashed and Geerts got the win from Febvre and Renaux.
