Herlings Adds to His Legend

While Jeffrey Herlings continues to make his record GP victories more difficult to catch, there are also a number of riders who have made big progress up the all-time list the last few years. The 114 that Herlings reached last weekend is of course, at the very top of all the lists and nobody is catching that number for a long, long time, if ever.

It seems an unreachable target, but then again, when Stefan Everts won his 101st in 2006, some 20 years ago, we thought that number was not going to be broken. Good to see both Tom Vialle and Lucas Coenen doing big things, as Vialle moved to fourth on the current riders list and Coenen is now sixth on that list.

The young Belgian does have a bunch of GP wins to take before he moves past Jago Geerts, who has 24 MX2 wins and is fifth on the current riders list. Currently 17 on the all-time list, Romain Febvre has another GP to win to join Georges Jobe, Andre Malherbe and Paul Friedrichs on 28 GP wins, and that will be something very special, because the Frenchman is sure to win at least one GP this year.

Fellow Frenchman and red-hot rookie in MXGP, Vialle is currently equal with Jeff Smith on 25 GP wins and could join Alessio Chiodi on 26 if he wins another. Again, that should happen this year, but who knows what type of mood Lucas Coenen and Jeffrey Herlings are going to get in as the season unfolds.

I would not be surprised to see Coenen join the all-time top 30 list, which currently has Seb Tortelli and Hakan Carlqvist on 20 wins each. Amazing to think Coenen is so close to two of the GP legends but doing 20 GPs a year is something that these men didn’t do, but still a great achievement by Coenen if he can join the top 30 all-time list.

Kay de Wolf isn't far off the all-time 30 list either, but it might take him a little longer to reach it, but for sure, once he gets 100% healthy, then GP wins will also come in the MXGP class.
