Herlings Goes For Four

Jeffrey Herlings heads to Darwin, Australia this week to try and capture his fourth Grand Prix victory in a row, something he hasn’t done since 2020, when he won the last two GPs of 2019 and the first two of 2020. The last time he won four in a row in the same season was his 2018 domination, when he won 13 in a row.

MXGP moved from Turkey to China for the penultimate round of 20 in 2025 last weekend. The long oriental trip was memorable for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing as five-time world motocross champion, Jeffrey Herlings went 1-1 for victory. Herlings pushes up to 112 career victories with his third MXGP Grand Prix win in succession and his third ‘1-1’ of the season.

“So hot. I was cooking. So humid. The speed was not a problem…just the heat. I managed to pull it off. Another 1-1 and I’m hoping it’s going to be a bit cooler in Australia. I had just one day to adapt here and now we’ll have more time for the final round. I want to give it up to the Red Bull KTM team for this win. I’ll try and do my best again next week.”

Herlings, who turned 31 on the eve of the GP, won a damp Qualification Heat on Saturday, meaning Pole Position and 10 championship points for the fourth time in 2025 (the second highest total in the class behind Lucas Coenen).

Sunday brought sunny skies, but the harsh temperatures meant the races were oppressive and demanding. Herlings was able to power to the lead in the last minutes of the opening MXGP moto.

The Dutchman has now taken the checkered flag at least once in the last three grands prix. Herlings was strong from the start of the second race. He defended P1 from Tim Gajser all the way to the flag, the difference only 0.6 at the conclusion. Win #112 of his career is also the fifth of the year and the sixth podium (four in a row).

Of course, the previous GP in Turkey, Herlings also showed why many still call him the fastest man in Europe (maybe still the world). MXGP entered the final three weeks and last three fixtures of the 2025 season with a trip to the flat, hardpacked Afyon circuit hosting the Grand Prix of Turkey. The Dutchman won for the second race in a row and for the fourth time with his 2025 KTM 450 SX-F.

“Super-pleased with this win. For a Dutch rider it’s a difficult track; one of the most difficult and very hard to pass but we managed to get it done and the weekend went better than I expected. We made some good changes for the elevation so a shout out to KTM for providing me with such a good bike. 111 now, so let’s go to China and to the final two. Let’s try and finish the year as strong as we can.”

Sunday’s motos followed the same trend. Lucas Coenen holeshotted and won the first race as Herlings ran to P2. The teammates swapped roles in the second outing as Coenen had to come back from a top five start. Herlings had edged clear to go 2-1 and claim the overall and Lucas came very close to relegating from title rival Romain Febvre but took P3 and a 1-2 for 2nd on the day. Herlings now has four wins for the year and has two on the bounce after acing his home Grand Prix two week.

The three peat started at the Grand Prix of The Netherlands as that circuit closed the western European chapter of 2025 MXGP. Herlings swept to victory at home and in dominating fashion. Herlings rules every session and moto at Arnhem for his third MXGP victory and fourth podium of 2025.

“I’m happy I could save energy in the first moto because I needed it later! I remember when I was 18, and racing in the sand didn’t get tired at all! I was really pushing hard in that second moto: Lucas had unbelievable speed, but my pace was fast too. I’m very happy with my weekend and very pleased with a 1-1-1. Already looking forward to Turkey in two weeks.”

Saturday’s MXGP qualification heat belonged comprehensively to Jeffrey Herlings, who set off from P1 in the gate and was unchallenged. On Sunday Herlings extended his run across the motos with bright starts and forceful early moves. The Dutchman led both 30 minute and 2 lap races from gate to flag.
