Herlings Superior in Latvia
The Red Bull KTM factory team continue to own the victories as Jeffrey Herlings won an exciting MXGP qualification race. The Flying Dutchman beat home fellow KTM factory rider, Lucas Coenen with Romain Febvre a close third place.
Championship points are now Romain Febvre 495 points, Lucas Coenen 460pts, Glenn Coldenhoff 328pts, Maxime Renaux 326pts, Tim Gajser 305pts.
Jeffrey Herlings: I mean, its good to come off a win last weekend, because Saturday is always difficult for me. Lucas and Romain were pushing hard and the track was sketchy from the rain overnight. Lets make the most of it and try and do the same tomorrow.
MXGP Qualification race
Herlings with the lead coming out of the first corner, ahead of Coenen, Fernandez, Febvre, Coldenhoff, Bonacorsi, Bogers, Pumpurs, Renaux and Van Doninck 10th. Herlings showing there is nothing with his speed now and he gaps Coenen by 1.5 seconds.
Lap three and Coenen chasing Herlings well and Febvre all over the back wheel of Fernandez, then came Coldenhoff, Bonacorsi, Bogers, Pumpurs, Watson and Van Doninck. Yamaha duo of Geerts and Vlaanderen in 14th and 16th respectively.
Herlings getting slightly away from Coenen and Febvre a couple of second behind the Belgian, then came Fernandez, Coldenhoff, Bonacorsi, Bogers, Pumpurs, Watson and Van Doninck. Febvre suddenly got closer to the two front guys and all three within two seconds of each other.
Not a lot happening as the gaps between the top three remained the same and Herlings lead was two seconds over Coenen, and three seconds over Febvre. Lap eight it was Herlings, Coenen, Febvre, Fernandez, Coldenhoff, Bonacorsi, Bogers, Van Doninck, Watson and Seewer. Three Dutch and two Belgians in the top ten.
Coenen suddenly all over the back wheel of Herlings and really pushing the Dutchman. Herlings responded a little bit, but then Coenen also responded, and Febvre was suddenly also in the picture, all three fighting for the moto win. Herlings got away a little and it was now Coenen trying to fight of Febvre, who was putting all sorts of pressure on the teenager. Herlings wins it from Coenen and Febvre.
