Herlings - The Sandman Wins

Herlings - The Sandman Wins

Aug 18

  • Race Report

Red Bull KTM factory rider Jeffrey Herlings just never gives up and after losing major points on Tim Gajser and Jorge Prado in Sweden last week, the Dutchman collected a 1-1 performance in Arnhem today and gained 12 points on Gajser and six on Prado. Prado is also smiling big time, as he closes the gap to Gajser to just nine points.

Now, heading to Switzerland next weekend, the title fight is again a three-way battle. It was Herlings 107th GP win and he keeps his challenge for a sixth World title alive. Second overall was Prado with 2-2 scores and third Gajser with 4-3 scores.

Jeffrey Herlings: Finally got a good start and I followed Glenn and Jorge and, I am pumped for a 1-1 at home. I had to work my ass off. I had a good start and a good pace. I made a mistake and nearly went down and Jorge passed me. Tim and Jorge are really good, so happy to win and get number 107.

Jorge Prado: A good weekend for me, I showed good speed and I made my way to first and then Jeffrey came by and I had a problem with a lapper and Jeffrey got away. We were going on a good pace and happy with that. Going to good track for me, can't wait until Switzerland.

Tim Gajser: I mean, I have to be happy, compared to Lommel, we changed some things and I was way more comfortable. Shame about the crash in the second moto, just a little mistake and the track was rough and then I fell back and Coldenhoff came to me and I had to push the last laps. I lost some points.

MXGP Moto Two

Coldenhoff with the holeshot in MXGP moto two, then Gajser, Prado, and Herlings, but Herlings quickly passed Prado, then came Geerts, Seewer, Gaudagnini, Febvre, Mewse, and Bogers 10th. Cairoli 12th. Brilliant first lap with the three kings inside the top four. Geerts all over Seewer and Gajser trying to pass Coldenhoff. Prado passed Herlings when the Dutchman ran off the side of the circuit and Cairoli up to 11th place.

Prado now all over Gajser and looking desperate to get to Coldenhoff. Gajser all over Coldenhoff, but he has to watch out for Prado and Herlings lost a little ground on the front three. Prado into second and wanting to show something, but Prado and Gajser nearly crashed over the jump and Gajser repassed, but then Prado got him back. Gajser then into the lead as he and Prado both passed Coldenhoff. Herlings all over Coldenhoff and knowing he needs to stick with the front two guys.

Herlings into third and its on for the big three. The intensity of these three is just ridiculous, all seem a little on the edge of their limits. Looks like all three have taken a breath and not riding as hard, but it will warm up again soon, no doubt. Top ten on lap four was Gajser, Prado, Herlings, Coldenhoff, Seewer, Febvre, Gaudagnini, Geerts, Cairoli and Van Doninck in 10th. Mewse 13th.

Febvre moved past Seewer for fifth and eight seconds behind Coldenhoff. Prado all over Gajser, but Herlings also no that far back in third. Cairoli out of the moto on his Ducati. Prado into the lead and you just know Herlings will try and get Gajser now, as quickly as possible. Herlings into second and again, the crowd explode in excitement.

Severe points lost to the red plate man today, both to Prado and Herlings. Herlings needs to get that points down as much as possible today. Herlings into the lead and closing that points gap again. Where Herlings finds speed so quickly and make a pass, its just brilliant.

In no time the gap was 5.3 seconds as a lapped riders got in trouble ahead of the Spaniard and on lap nine it was Herlings, Prado, Gajser, Coldenhoff, Febvre, Seewer, Guadagnini, Van Doninck, Geerts and Bonacorsi. Soon after it was up to six seconds.

Lap 11 and Prado wasn’t giving up as the lead was 5.7 seconds, but we all know Herlings doesn’t fade, so he should be okay with six minutes and two laps remaining. Still a tall order for Herlings, but he has won three GPs now in the last five GPs run (Lombok II, Lommel and Arnhem).

Gajser a big crash and losing ground on the front two and allowing Coldenhoff onto him. Herlings wins the moto, the Grand Prix and obviously, the crowd. Prado second in the moto and the GP and Gajser third in the moto and the GP. A day of the big three, no doubt.
