Jett Lawrence interview

Posted on August 23, 2021

Jett Lawrence has shown a lot in 2021 as the teenager fights for the AMA 250 motocross championship. He didn’t win last weekend, but he did gain some valuable points and is right in the fight. The young Aussie also spoke about his disappointment of not getting to race the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations, a decision that was taken out of his hands by higher places.

MXLarge: How was your day?

Lawrence: I think I was disappointed I couldn’t gain more points, but Jmart was feeling really good in that second moto, and I didn’t have much for him. All races will be disappointed if you miss the overall by one point, but it wasn’t a bad day, I felt pretty good on the bike. The track was gnarly, and it was crazy how good it was considering how much rain they had, so the track boys were on it. It wasn’t too bad a day as I didn’t feel the greatest.

MXlarge: On the podium you alluded to having a rough week. Were you sick or was it just a rough week on the track?

Lawrence: Just a rough week, didn’t give me the best opportunity this weekend, but we just gave our all and made the most of it.

MXlarge: That first moto you flicked the switch and went for it. Was that finding better lines, or you just got urgent to get to the front?

Lawrence: I think a bit of both. The first two laps it was hard to find the flow when you are getting roosted so much. I found some open room when he cleared up and found my flow again.

MXLarge: What do you need to work on now?

Lawrence: I don’t think much changes, we still go into the weekend like every other race, with go for a 1-1 or gain points. We go in feeling confidence and do our job right and a game plan, go there, give it 100% and try and get a win or a podium. We don’t have a plan and in motocross you can’t plan anything, it’s crazy.

MXLarge: Is there a comfort knowing you also have Hunter in there for support now the points are close?

Lawrence: I mean, it is nice, but I don’t tell my brother to do something to help me in the championship and he is in a fight with JMart for third place and he has his stuff to worry about and I have to make sure I do my stuff. We might help each other out a little bit there, but I think we mainly focus on ourselves on the track.

MXLarge: Can you explain what is happening about the Nations, are you racing?

Lawrence: I’m definitely out. It sucks because obviously I really wanted to go and I can speak for Hunter, we want to go and represent our country, but people a lot higher than us with visas and that stuff, just wasn’t really allowing us. Mainly the people higher up in this world that’s just kinda not letting us do this right now.
