Jett Lawrence interview - Number Seven

Jett Lawrence interview - Number Seven

May 1

Honda factory rider Jett Lawrence took victory number seven in his rookie 450cc AMA supercross season and did it the way he often does, get a holeshot and just ride away from the opposition.

Having already won two AMA 250 motocross championships, and an AMA 450 motocross championship, the young sensation is going for his fourth major AMA title in the indoor series and no doubt, if he wins, he would automatically, become an all-time legend, in record time.

Lawrence is now on 32 wins in AMA overalls, supercross and motocross combined and recently passed David Bailey and Mike Kiedrowski who have 30 each. If he wins his fourth AMA title in the supercross, he joins Mark Barnett, Jeff Emig, David Bailey and Mike Kiedrowski, who all have four AMA major titles.

He is now 17th in the all-time overall win list and has Jett Stanton (37), Jeff Emig (36) and Kevin Windham (35) just ahead of him. If he wins the 2024 motocross championship, he goes to five titles and joins James Stewart in the all-time list.

If the kid wins a bunch of AMA Nationals in 2024, expect him to end the 2024 season close to 11th placed man on the list, six time AMA motocross champion Broc Glover, who has 45 overall victories.

Interestingly, in 10th place on the all-time list is fellow Aussie, Chad Reed, with 55 overall wins (SX and MX) and that would be the goal for 2025, moving into the top ten all-time winners. Seems a very likely chance he does that next year. The kid is just 20 years old and racking them up fast.

Can he also join Jeremy Mcgrath and Ryan Dungey as an AMA supercross championship winner in his rookie season. Whatever the outcome of the final two rounds, he heads to the next round in Denver, with a 12 point lead over second placed man Cooper Webb and is riding with a lot of confidence.

He sat down with the World media and this is what he told us.

MXLarge: Great job, and we might say that track was hard to pass on, but in the heat race, you went down and made a lot of passes. Can you explain that and also the wire-to-wire win in the main event?

Lawrence: Yes, the start in the heat wasn’t ideal and I was wanting to turn and I saw a little window I could maybe sneak into, so I went to turn and my body turned, but the front wheel kind of pushed out and I couldn’t save it, so I had to start from behind. I was able to find some pretty good spots to pass and get through rather quickly. I had some close moments with other riders but was able to ride through. Obviously in the main, we didn’t want to start that the same way, so we made sure we executed a good start, and we got the Honda hooked up and that made life a lot easier.

MXlarge: Not only do you control your own fate, but you put Webb into a position that he doesn’t control his now. Does that change anything in the last two rounds. You have to ride with him in mind, or you just charging for victory?

Lawrence: In my mind, the job isn’t done, so I am going to try and focus like each race like he is right there. That is a better way to put it. We will take race by race, deal with situation that could go bad or could go my way, so we will see.

MXlarge: You were by yourself most of the main, what changed about the track and what lines did you have to hook up?

Lawrence: I was kind of able to take most of the same lines throughout the race, more so the rhythms, but in the turns I had to switch it up a bit, just because some of the lines blew out and some got took deep, line at the finish line, where the ruts were no traction and I had to switch that up. You can lose a lot of time if you didn’t get the three (section) before the sand. Not too much changed.

MXLarge: Speaking to Jeffrey Herlings a few weeks ago and he said you are the fastest rider on the planet, and he is glad you race in America and not in GPs. What is it like to hear that from him?

Lawrence: It is cool to hear that out of such an all-time rider like Jeffrey. He has won a lot in Europe, like MXGP and that stuff. It is cool he says that, but I still don’t think that, I think I need to earn my spot there and there are a lot of fast guys, who can come with some pretty fast raw speed, but I will take that from him, because you don’t get that every day. Really cool to hear.

MXLarge: What started with your starts from the heat and the main, how do you refocus that way and you didn’t have a great gate pick in the main, but you still got out of the gate much faster.

Lawrence: No option of getting a bad start, so had to go with plan A and get a good one.
